Strange problems on new Enterprise 32-bit laptop. Please help!

I'm in the process of setting up a new work laptop with Win7 Enterprise and I'm having two issues:

1- Image previews/thumbnails are not displaying in Explorer.
2- Most of the files I've copied from my old system have a grey "X" overlay on the icon.

These issues may very well be related, but I really don't know. As best I can tell the grey "X" has to do with files being archived to tape (?), but I have no idea why this is happening. All I did was transfer the files from one laptop to another using an external hard drive. Removing the "A" file attribute does not fix it.

As far as the thumbnails, I've ensured that "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is not set. I've deleted the cached thumbnail files. Still no luck.

Here's a screenshot that illustrates both issues: http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k162/okc_smoker/ScreenShot00322.jpg

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the Forum
What folder have you copied these images to? What's the full path to the images?

Thanks!

The files are currently in "C:\Users\****\Pictures\Wallpaper\Widescreen". I've saved a couple pictures to this folder from the web and the thumbnails display perfectly for them. Likewise, if I copy one of the affected pictures to the desktop (or anywhere else) they continue to exhibit the problems (no thumbnail, no preview, and the grey "X").

Right click on one of them and then click Properties. Is one or both of the checkboxes at the bottom of the window checked? If so uncheck it!

No, neither of those options are checked. I just noticed that all these files also have the "O" attribute, which indicates that they are offline. I have no idea how that value was set, but I'm guessing it's part of the problem. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an easy way to change that attribute...

I must admit I'm getting a bit lost here but here's an idea. Open Libraries, double click Picturs. Click Locations and add the path to your External hard Drive. Then navigate to one of the images on the Ext HD and see if that shows OK

Have you tried to take ownership? They came from another computer, so your computer might be "protected" from opening them.

Yes, I did take ownership of them and that did not fix the problem.

I've managed to narrow down the problem to the "O" file attribute (Offline). I found an app that can change this attribute but it was only a trial version so it only did 100 files. However, the 100 that had the "O" attribute removed were fixed. Now I just need to figure out how else I can change it (for free).

Type services.msc in the start search box. Now look to see if "offline files" is started and set to automatic.

You might also have a Sync-Center problem
