Ok, so my birthday is comming up and I was thinking of upgrading my RAM in my laptop. It currently has 2GB and I want to upgrade it to 5GB. I know I will need to have 64 Bit Windows 7 to take advantage of all that RAM. Will it be possible to reinstall Windows only using the 64 Bit version and use the Key that I got with my laptop? I heard that it is interchangable as long as you don't switch versions (like from Home Premium to Ultimate) and don't switch computers.

Hello there.

The easiest way to go would be to upgrade to 4GB or 6GB, but 5GB? it's kind of senseless (no offense, senseless in a "weird" way) because you'd have to buy a 2GB module and a 1GB one..

BTW, try to find the same RAM vendor/model and timings, mixing RAMs is not a good idea :)

Well, I was going to buy a 4 GB one, and use one of two of the 1GBs already in my computer, but if I shouldn't mix them... maybe I will just stick with 4GBs

Well, yes. i don't like to mix RAMs and neither mixing different sizes (by size i mean 2GB, 4GB, hehe)

When buying RAM, always make sure they're the exact same model/vendor and have the same timings :D that'll keep you away from possible issues regarding RAM

4Gb is a good number.
6 or 8Gb is a waste for most users.

Yes, you can install 64 bit with the same key. The key allows you to install either 32 or 64, but not both.

Just make sure the new ram you're buying is the same timing (9-9-9-24 etc etc) and ideally the same speed as your current ram and it'll be fine.

Mixing and matching really is a non-issue now a days unless you're OCing.

Ok, so tomorrow I will be heading out to best buy to buy 4GBs of RAM, and replace it with two GB card in my laptop, so I won't be mixing and they will be the same brand. I'm guessing I just have to call Microsoft to activate using the key on the bottom of my computer? (Since I will be using a Retail disc to install)
