System Crashes When Copying to External HD

The problem is USB related, installing graphics drivers will have no effect.

Windows 7, for some reason, hates it when any USB port is being worked too hard, and as a result goes into overdirve, causing the CPU to jump up to 80-100%.

My PC always does this whenever i download a lot of things from the internet, or when i transfer anything from my or to my external HDD, all of which use USB.

I have no clue how to fix it however, i have installed chipset drivers and everything, i will install the latest BIOS version and let you know if anything changes.

Given that symptom doesn't happen to the vast majority of machines, I think your diagnosis may not be correct.

Ok i have just installed my latest BIOS version, and tweaked a few settings in the BIOS (HD Audio, disabled. Hybrid SLI, Disabled etc) and my computer seems fine now, i tested my sytem out by transferring 50GB of data to my external HDD, did it without a problem, also i plugged in as many USB's as i could and worked them and the system overtime, again no problems.

I will see if the problem is actually resolved and post if the system interrupts problem reappears.

Yesterday I ran into the same issue! Copying a .sle file of 45 Gb to an E-Sata drive made the system hang.

I think that I know the culprit. When Windows starts copying the Action Center told me that Windows Defender was (suddenly) disabled. So, during the copying process, I restarted Windows Defender and since that moment copy-speed decreased to an amount of 3 Mb/sec. I tryed to cancel the copy-process, but that killed Windows Explorer.

After a reboot I tryed to copy the file again, but then I had Windows Defender disabled manualy. That did the trick. The copy-process went at the normal speed without any hang or interruption whatever.

I never had issues with smaller files and when copying a folder with a large number of files there wasn´t any problem, even when Windows Defender was enabled. This was the first time I copied such a large file.
It seems that Windows Defender has problems with large files, when you want to copy these.

So, from now on, I disable the realtime protection of Windows Defender when I want to copy such a large file.

Hope that I could help (in my case this was the solution).

Same problem here, but fixed, at least for now with the hotfix posted by vram, thanks a lot for that. Just make sure to get the hotfix that match your platform (x86 or 64), because in my case by default it was x86 and i had to change it to the 64. I was having this problem with files not really large, 200Mb+. I installed the hotfix and make a test with a 450Mb file and it worked fine. I will be testing tomorrow with my other external drive and with a flash drive and larger files, if I get problems again I'll let you know.

I have this same transfer issue but my external is a sata interface. It's not caused bt Defender my end.
