i just read on another site that you cant create a system image using win7 home premium. that you need third party software to do it. they say its only reservered for the more expensive versions. is this true.

Yes, that is correct, however there are free/inexpensive alternatives.. Macrium Reflect is a very good one ... get it -=> here
