Is it just me?
Win 7 takes a long time to recognize any new flash drive. It first checks for new drivers and then installs it. The whole process takes maybe 30 seconds to a minute.

It was never this slow in XP?

It will do that the first time you plug it into a new USB slot. XP did that too, if you unplug and replug in the same slot it shoult not go through that all over again. Sould be just a few seconds.

Though if there is somthing a little odd about that card reader that seems to require a special driver that windows 7 does not have and never actually installs, then I could see that it might re-try every time before defaulting to something generic.

I see this a lot with thumb drives. There are a lot of them that try to be "special" and require a special driver whereas most of them just advertise as a generic USB mass storage device and have no problems.

Updated my system specs.

Yes, once the drivers are installed for one pen drive, it opens in a jiffy the next time onwards, but the initial installation takes quite a long time..

Ok, yeah if it was doing it every time then that would be "problem" that might have a "solution" but it soundslike it's working "normally", just that the initial install is taking longer than would be nice.

You might be able to speed up such things by turning off the ability to search windows update for drivers. A lot of that time may be it looking to the net to find drivers from MS itself. /sometimes/ that is helpful and sometimes it actually hurts. I generally prefer to have it not do that, fail, then hand load current manufacturer drivers from their own website. (Or load them before instaling the HW whichever the speciric instructions for the hardware in question require)

Disable autoplay and access your flash drives from explorer. That will speed up the process a little

am currently having this same problem. I have an Indra 8GB USB thumb drive. It takes between 45seconds to 1min to recognise it on my Dell Studio 1555 Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
I have Autorun disbaled (for other reasons) and Device Manager does not give me any alerts as to device driver error.
Has anyone been able to get this sorted out please?

I wonder if this is related to indexing? I have indexing service off and I don't notice any delays when I plug in a USB or turn on a USB docking station. Takes a few seconds for the drive in the dock to spin up and all is well.
