Hi,
whenever I right-click an item in the taskbar and a pop-up menu appears , the lettering is in white on a grey background and very difficult to read. It wasn't always like this and I cannot , despite many attempts , change the colors to make it more readable.
It only is a problem with items in the Taskbar.
Can anyone suggest a solution?

Since you don't state how long you've had the problem, I would try a reboot, if you haven't already done so.

thanks for replying.
Here is a screenshot showing the results of right-clicking on the Chrome icon in the toolbar.
As you can see the list of items are not readable due to the color scheme - white writing on a grey background.
Yes, I've tried altering the themes and windows color schemes but nothing seems to work.
The problem started when I had to recover from a systems crash a few days ago.

I'm afraid there is no 'before' point as I had to re-install a clone of my C: drive which was 6 months old
and all restore points were erased.
Is there no way I can alter the color scheme to make the font black instead of white?

Are you using a custom theme?

For now, you might see if running a sfc /scannow command may help.

I don't think any themes are running and I have tried sfc /scannow - nothing works.
Before this I noticed that the three minimise/maximise/delete buttons in the top right corner of every window
were also invisible and could only be seen when moused over - but a change of color scheme solved that.

I know you don't necessarily want to change the font, but changing the font colors (which can be done from the same screen) for the menus might make things legible again. This area used to be easy to access!

As a test, create a new user account and see how it looks while logged in to it. This will help determine if it's an issue for just your account or the system.

If it works just fine in the new account, then you could use the new account instead of the old one if you like.

I'm afraid it does not matter which browser or account I'm using as I get the same
result from whatever icon ( if it has a fly-out menu) is in the Taskbar .

In that case, you could try doing a repair install to hopefully avoid a full clean install.

1.) Have you tried right clicking the desktop-personalize. Then scroll down and click windows 7 basic theme. Now scroll up and click windows 7 under aero theme. Did that correct the issue?

2.) Are your graphics drivers up to date?

If you have an ati or nvdia card go to the specific site and use their scan tool to find the correct driver:

1.) Have you done any customizations or registry modifications to the OS?

2.) Have you done the suggestion of sfc /scannow?

3.) A repair install suggested by brink would be the way to go if the above are not leading to the cause. You will not lose any programs or files.

Advanced Appearance Settings

Have you tried modifying the font colours in the Personalization section?
(Personalization > Window Color and Appearance > click on the Advanced appearance settings link)

lehnerus2000: I dont get the options your showing with the
' Change of color on your window borders , Start menu and taskbar '
and a list of pastel shaded options.
I only get the second smaller 'Window color and appearance ' box
even when I load an Aero theme.

You do get the Window color and appearance box? From that screen, are you able to click on the drop-down arrow to the right of the Item box where "Desktop" is displayed?
