Hi,

Every time I shut down my laptop, it tries to install the same updates for Windows. If I check, they are shown to already be installed. It is always the same four. Newer updates install just once and are fine. It is driving me crazy. Please help.

Go to control panel-->programs and features--> in the left pane select view installed updates then go to .NET section and see if those updates are really there. Updates for 8/May/2012 are 12 updates and then on 29/MAY are 3. I have faced this problem with KB2656405 three times and then i deleted it, shut down the computer, reboot it and finally did a check for windows updates and all was fine.

damned stupid isn't it and yet again the same updates are happening again this morning as I type... pay the licence for the system and get no MS support unless you pay them again lol.

I will ask my pc man and see if I get a result, if I do will post for you.

best

Solved

Hi,

I solved the problem, but it was expense. I bought a program called Reimage. It is designed to repair Microsoft operating system. The cost is $69.95. I wish I had not been forced into this solution.

Golden,

I did try it. It did not help. I think I tried everything Microsoft offered. I researched their website over many weeks. I would find a tool and try it. It was always nothing to do with the fix.:( I was at my wits end. I wish I knew where the problem was. The program I bought replaced many parts of the operating system according to the report after I ran it. It said they were damaged or out of date. The problem did disappear too. With the last new batch of big updates, it was taking 40 minutes to shut down. Not good for a laptop and my work. Thanks for your concern.

Hi Guys,

many thanks for the suggestions and I think it is going to have to be a format, coz this is doing my head in... 2 or 3 times a day, every day since the 1st June.

Am going for upgrade as well to 64bit, hopefully that will help me get speed and satisfaction out of my machine!

Can you bright people tell me please...........

1. WHAT IS NECESSARY TO BE ACTIVE IN THE SYSTEM TRAY ON START-UP ?
2. CAN I STOP THINGS INSTALLING INTO START-UP ?
3. DOES HAVING AN EXTERNAL NETWORK DRIVE CONNECTED SLOW START-UP ?

best wishes

Steve

Steve,

I don't know the answer to your first two questions because I am not a technical expert. I suppose that's why had to buy software to solve my problem. The third question is easy to answer from experience. It depends upon the speed of the network. I was working at a business and more more computers were being added and the system kept getting slower and slower. A simple speed increase the technicians made corrected the problem.

Solution

I had the exact same problem and have tried everything and nothing helped, until I found and run this tool to repair the .NetFramework:
.NET Framework Cleanup Tool User's Guide - Aaron Stebner's WebLog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

After the repair I run Windows Update, the first time it found one update for .Net and the second time it found nine updates including those five that didn't install before. But this time every thing worked perfect and I have no more problems with Windows Update.
