Thelma's PC...

I've been working with thelma and the time has come to start a thread to help clean up some problems she's been having with her machine, if anyone has any tips or suggestions on the problems she presents, please, do not hesitate to post them.

Some problems she has had or is having:

• Updates appearing and disappearing - This has seemed to have calmed down.

• Spell checker not working - Grammarly Spell Checker & Grammar Checker has seemed to help for this. And,

• Her machine randomly switches to French and then back to her default language. I've had her recheck the settings in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Region and Language, she's made some changes, but it still switches back and forth randomly. This problem is the one we are working on at the moment.

First up;
She does have her System Specs filled in, but in order to see what she is working with I've asked her to run a BSOD report, she is not experiencing any BSOD's at the present time, but I wanted to see what the report finds on her machine, it may offer clues as to why her machine is acting the way it is.

Okay thelma, you're up, I need that report!

Just a thought, could Thelma's problem be related to the keyboard language settings. This website does have some suggestions & a section on the keyboard language settings, as well as one post on using keyboard short cuts that maybe causing the language shift, as apparently some keyboard short cuts can be used to change the keyboard language.

Thanks Anak , for setting up this thread and all the help you already gave me, and thanks Ranger for your suggestion I will have a look at that.

I had a look at this, been into my keyboard settings before, is set on English UK. I have every thing possible on a Laptop set on English UK, but when ever I do a cleanup, my pc goes back to french, could it be DELL and not Windows Microsoft ?

I will have a look now in the DELL community, why didn't I think of that before ?

Morning thelma,

There is a problem with the file you uploaded, it won't open because it has a "shortcut" file extension. Do you still have the log collector file in its original form?

If you do it should look like the left icon:


All you have to do is click on it and a user account control (UAC) prompt box similar to this one will open; Like this:



Click on yes to start the dm logcollector, a command (CMD) prompt window will open like this:



Press any key or the space-bar to start the log collection it will take several minutes to complete, when done it will tell you it is done collecting and to press any key or space-bar to continue to finish and close the CMD prompt window.

As it is doing this it will place a zip file with your machine name on your desktop close to where the dm logcollector.exe file is, in my case my machines name is PESTER1 like the icon on the right in the first screenshot. That is the file you need to upload in your next post.

If you do not have the original dm log collector file you will have to re-download it from here: BSOD Report

Yes Anak, thank you , I have done it now about 7 times. Have deleted all the old once not to get confused.

Do all the steps, everything is easy, the desktop shortcut looks like the left one, the screen appears and I am asked to click twice any key
Then it closes, but tells me first it puts a zip file on the desktop. Well, it does not !!!

So the last time I created one my self by creating a zip file ( right click on the log collector picture ) and then renamed it putting my PC name in it.

Done it now 8 times, no difference

Have you ever been in your bios ?
In setup selecting a language is an option so the os could be reading that language ?

It's curious that its failing to place the log-colletor zip file onto the desktop; How did you create one?

No, I cannot get into my BIOS because I don't have the password needed. That is how I arrived here on Sevenforums the first time ( and you will all learn to regret it :roflmao: )

I even called Dell in England where I bought the PC. The cave me a password that did not work. Then I wanted to go into the BIOS for sound problems. There is a long thread about that problem, I ended up using two little speakers, which I still do now.
Its no problem really.

I was thinking ( ), could it be because I have more than one account on this PC ? This is the Thelma account I am always using.
Perhaps I should use the administrator account ?

I will try that out now.

Yes thelma, using the administrator account did "the trick"; See there, you were able to figure that out on your own.

Health comes and goes for me, presently I'm fair to middling. I thank you for your concern.

I'll have to make a thread in Site stuff to see if John (z3r) can add a line to the BSOD reporting tutorial; No where does it say it needs to be run under an administrator account, painfully obvious, but its not mentioned.

At first glance everything looks okay, but I'm going to need some time to go over your System Information\Software Environment\Windows Error Reporting\ section, it's 7,144 lines deep when copied over to my spreadsheet.

Some items do stand out:

• Do you have Glarys Utilities installed? This error: Faulting application name: Initialize.exe, version: 5.0.0.35 is related to Glarys.

• Another Glary: Faulting application name: StartupManager.exe, version: 5.10.0.105

• Do you have Adobe Updater installed? This error: Faulting application name: atibtmon.exe, version: 2.0.0.0 is related to Adobe.

• See if they are listed in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features, if they are uninstall them.

• Glarys should be, the adobe updater may be a hard to find. Check the Strart menu for Adobe, click on the windows flag in left corner of taskbar.

The rest of the entries are related to your recent Windows Updates problem and components in the Windows Store. See if you can uninstall Glarys and the updater first and we will go from there. Meanwhile I'll keep looking in your files.

I have Uninstalled Glarys Utilities ( handy tool I think ) and Adobe flash player 19 Active X, both with there uninstall wizards, hoping that will also uninstall the updater.
Can I later on put them back, or is it better to live without them ?

Apart from the language change, which I have been living with for yonks now, I have one little popup that I have been trying to ignore ( thinking it will go away then.

It is Wireless Configuration." Notification dll is not available, program will not work correctly."

But it works fine

Since I have discovered Seven forums in fact, my PC has been in such good shape
It is only me, making mistakes by trying things out.

Hi Thelma, which browser is your main one?
If you use something like chrome you can uninstall flash player completely and leave it uninstalled. It's a security nightmare anyway.
Chrome has its own built in sandboxed flash.

No Sound!:banghead: Only with external speakers plugged in.

I have downloaded Advanced Audio FX engine and IDT Audio. I think they both come with the DELL Bloatware:sarc:

The Advanced Audio FX , I think, has to do with the webcam ( which I have blocked with a black sticky paper, because I read somewhere that they ( the BAD BOYS ) can spy on you.

I don't understand my audio configuration at all, so it is well possible that it is my installation that makes the NO SOUND issue.

Must admit,I have been with this problem already 2 times on seven forums and very knowledgeable persons have been trying to help me. In the end we think it's a hard ware problem,but I still am not 100 % sure.

Well it sounds like it could be a hardware. If you've tried a lot of different suggestions on here and they don't seem to have resolved it, then that could be the case.

Although, if you're getting sound through the speakers it could be software/driver related.

So you can hear music through the speakers? But no Windows sounds?
