I'm finally back! After exams (which went quite well), my MENSA results coming back (I got in! ), my trip to Malaysia, Kenya and Sri Lanka, and two weeks of camp I've found the time to post a bit. For the rest of the term I won't be as active as I used to be but I'll be popping in and out.

Bad news: the confirmation didn't happen.
So they have given me three choices:
1. Extend the review for one month, that is till 1st December and prove that I'm fit for that position.
2. Go back on calls as a 1st line tech support rep.
3. Resign.

And I'm thinking which option to choose...

Edit: in case you wonder what's the harm in going with option 1.
Well, there are some a**holes you just can't work with.
Even if I clear the review and get confirmed, this issue is going to arise at the time of my half yearly appraisals as well. If you know what I mean!
I'm just so p*ssed off ATM.

Option 1 is the feasible solution, and your employer also want this. Just not to confirm the promotion so quickly. It happens there. Dont worry Dinesh! Just prove that you are needed there, and you can do it, for sure.

As regards Appraisals (or PDRs - Personal Development Reviews), I personally don't agree with them. To me, they are a complete waste of time, nothing seems to come out of them, and I describe them as "A tool designed to get people's backs up against each another".

Today, I played with Ubuntu for the first time after installing it last night.

How is it? I'm tempted to install it on my new laptop dual booting it along with win7.

I know i'm late to reply, but been busy lately.

I don't know...it's different, it's kinda fun to play with. Considering I got a free PC from a buddy of mine because he was tired of messing with it (it's not top of the line, but can still handle everything I would throw at it).

AMD 64 X2 3.0GHz
SLI 8800GTS's
Asus MB
4 gig of ram
Watercooling ( I still don't like the idea of water in a pc)
550W PSU
Big gaming case, fans and venting everywhere.

The vista key on the side of it might still be good, but I don't have any discs to use to reinstall, so I formatted the drive ( it was toast because of programs, registry errors and all that jazz.....blue screen before Windows, boot loops) and made a Ubuntu disc with my laptop
Tossed it in, let it do it's thing, and it runs like a dream. The oddities with the system that are hard to get used to are that there really isn't "drivers". So, the SLI 8800GTS's ( yes, it was a gaming PC) are pretty much worthless now. I took one card out just to save some power since there's no use for them both now. Trying to cross-reference programs to what I'm used to in Windows is kind of tough. So far, the nicest thing about it is that it sees all of the hardware, and it "just works". No runaround of getting drivers and configuring everything....it's just instantly there and working.

It's fun though, diving into something new(for me anyway). And since the PC was free, and runs fine (motherboard does have some issues though; the onboard LAN just doesn't even show up at all. It's like they aren't even there. Got an old network card from work for free to put in it), what better thing to do than to throw a free OS on it.

I've decided to dual boot Ubuntu and 7 on my laptop. I figure, what's the harm in it? Pretty slick, although still tough to get used to.
this is a whole new area for me. Been with Windows and Windows only since 3.1.
First thing I had to do was disable the damn touchpad. Annoying thing....

Have you come across BURG before? It's a variant of GRUB but it's a graphical bootloader:

Looks a lot nicer than the GRUB2 menu!

Although, I agree that the GRUB2 loader is quite bleh.

It took me ages to set it up, but I've finally got it how I like it. There's plenty of tutorials around if you ever fancy it: How to install Burg boot loader in Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10 Quantal Quetzal and LinuxMint13

Woah! Ubuntu has changed a lot since I last used it. I think my 'latest' live CD is 10.10.
