Back home in Utsjoki in my native Finland, today is the first day of Kaamos (Polar Night). Sun stayed up yesterday about 50 minutes, is today no longer over the horizon, and will be back in the last days of January staying away over two months.

So does that mean it's totally dark all the time?

And is there a moon, stars, or does it vary much?

I don't know how you cope with it, in the few days I was in Finland just having 2 hours of daylight each day was mega disorienting but for it to be dark for months on end would be something else

It's like night sky all the time. Stars are visible as well as moon. Polar Lights can be seen more often.

Think a sunny day; the stars and the moon are there but not visible because of the sunlight. Now "turn off the lights", take the sunlight away and you can see them.

Of course, the first week or so as well as the last week of Polar Night it is not completely dark, sun still remaining a moment or two during day time quite close to horizon, just below it. But the 4 to 6 weeks in the middle it really is one long night.

I know someone who lives at Barrow, Alaska, a short distance from Point Barrow. The northernmost town in the US. They have the same thing.

@ Dinesh, nice photo you look very relaxed, looking forward to seeing more.

@ Kari, you must find it a bit disorientating at first, you live in Germany now mostly and have got used to day and night. It would be wonderful to see the Northern Lights for real though. ;)

Ordered me my first laptop today. :D HP ProBook 4540s C6Z36UT Notebook PC - 3rd generation Intel Core i3-3110M 2.4GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6 Display, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit / Windows 8 Pro 64-bit at TigerDirect.com

This is 3rd generation Intel i3 and has hyperthread. 2.4GHz
It comes with Win 7 installed and a Win 8 disc is included.
It also has dual channel Ram capability.

Changing to SSD does not void the warranty on this one.
It does void the warranty on some of the ultra books where you have to dismantle the case to access the HDD.
I already checked with HP this one has an access door for the HDD and RAM.
All I have to do is clone the HDD to my Intel SSD and I'll be good to go. ;)

Well I'm sure it will do all I need. That is what counts.
If I want performance I'll be on this rig.

I thought about a tablet but no Wifi or cell service where I live and tablets have no LAN connector.

I have no doubt it will do all you need, it will be a nice laptop with a SSD.

I got an Android tablet recently as a Christmas present for my daughter, it goes without saying it's been out of it's box a few times already when she has gone to bed lol.

It's fine for basic surfing and apps, but lacks too much stuff I have become accustomed to with windows. I am sure she will like it though she is only young.

Was going to answer "Bloody cold!" as I remember it, decided then to check official statistics from Internet.

The average daily temperature during Polar Night period (November to February) is about -17°C (1.4°F). Because the sun remains below the horizon the difference between day and night temperatures is really small.
