Why don't we find out what is really causing it before we advise people to muck around in the registry? The registry should always be a last ditch effort if your OS refuses to work properly, not the first.

Fast Shutdown

JonM33 is right, don't resort to tweaking the registry in the early sign of PC problems.

I will suggest way to shutdown PC faster. Before shutting down make sure you saved all your works first because this will be really quick shut down without registry tweaking.

Here is the way (this is applicable also to XP & Vista):

1. Open Task Manager (ctrl + alt + del)
2. Click the SHUTDOWN tab
3. Hold CTRL on the keyboard & click TURN OFF

That's it!

On W7 You do not have the SHUTDOWN tab on Task Manager !!! Only a LoGOff under USER .

We are talking about Task Manager on W7 x64 there`s No ShutDown tab as it was on XP Task Manager . Your " red button " might be an added external program is NOT a function of the Task Manager please right click on it for properties to see what it is .

That's on the Cntrl>Alt>Delete Menu, where you can select Task Manager.

Many access Task Manager by rightclicking taskbar.

interesting. ok, i get the idea. make sure nothing is running: foreground/background

Okay for those who loves tweaking the registry add this to richc46 post:
run regedit then HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
When the cursor is on Control then on the right hand side you’ll find the “WaittoKillServiceTimeout” key. Right click on it and click modify. Change the long 20000 ms setting to a smaller number, say try 10000 first and go down to 5000, if your not satisfied you can go down to 500 but lower than that is not advisable. :)

OK I want to apologise You are talking about the " Alt-Ctrl-Del " page there is a RED BUTTON under it You have all the options like restart shutdown etc. . I was speaking about Task Manager , on XP there was a ShutDown tab which isn`t on W7 so We are both happy !!! :)

Here is a simple look see. Some times over a period of time programs get added to the start up and you don't even know it. Adobe is famous for this. It will add it's bloated programs to start up at boot time. If such programs start up at boot then they have to be shut down before the computer can shut down. Some antivirus take longer to shutdown than others. Start button, msconfig, start up will let you know what programs are starting up at boot. You can Google them and decide weather you want them to start a boot. I don't recommend using any miracle programs to fix this issue. I don't recommend going into registry and doing any thing unless you are highly trained in such things. With out any trick programs and/or registry tricks my computer boots and shuts down between 10 and 16 seconds. Windows 7/64 home premium.
