unable to connect to Internet after reinstalling Windows 7

I reinstalled Windows 7. First, the computer did not find the network adapter. I looked up my computer's serial number online and was able to get the drivers installed in order to connect to the network. Now, however, I am unable to connect from the network to the Internet.

I have a Westell 6100 modem and Belkin router. I tried resetting the modem and router numerous times, to no avail. I am able to access the Internet by plugging the phone cord directly to the computer, so my Internet is working, but not wireless. The device driver shows an exclamation point next to the Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect Modem.

The error is that there is a disconnect between the access point and the router...something like that. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cables, shutting down and powering back up...

Please attach that text file to your next post.

Temporarily unplug the LAN cable from your computer.
(i.e. unplug one end of the wire that goes from the Westell modem to the computer)
Restart the computer.
Connect to the Belkin router via Wi-Fi.
Create another IPCONFIG text file.
Please attach that text file to your next post.

*If you cannot get the IPCONFIG info to go into the text file, please post a screenshot of each cmd prompt window.

We were not able to connect to the router via Wifi. I don't seem to have Wifi.

I must be missing something very basic. But I just don't know what it is! I didn't change the way anything was plugged in. I don't know why the wi-fi isn't working..

2) restart the computer

*The wire running from the Westell modem to the computer is probably not a phone cord. It is probably a Local Area Network (LAN) cable (also known as an Ethernet cable). The ends of LAN cable are a bit bigger than the ends of a regular phone cord.

**I used the term Wi-Fi where you use the term wireless. The step where I said to "Connect to the Belkin router via Wi-Fi" is probably not needed just yet. The IPCONFIG info should tell me if the computer is connected to a Wireless Access Point (WAP). If it is connected, the text should also tell me if an IP address was assigned to the wireless network adapter in the computer.




I might have this all wrong, but in my mind, the original way that things were plugged in or connected was:
A phone cord goes from the wall to the Westell modem
A LAN cable (aka phone cord) goes from the Westell modem to the Belkin router
The computer makes a wireless connection to the Belkin router***

Does that sound about right?

***Either the Belkin router is also a WAP or there is another device connected to your network serving as a WAP.

Thank you for clarifying that the LAN cable is not a "phone cord".

Modem connected to computer by USB cable
Router connected by a cable to the computer...

This is how I think it was set up before:
phone cord from wall to Westell Modem
Modem connected to computer by USB cable
Router connected by a cable to the computer...

Not real familiar with DSL connections, But I think the Router should connect to the Wetell Modem by ethernet cable, then by a second ethernet cable to the computer. Not sure you need the USB cable if you do it this way.
