I am unable to install "Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2736422)", ending in Error Code 800736B3 - Windows Update has encountered an unknown error. I have run SURT and the SFC scan. Attached is my CBS.zip. Thanks in advance.

You have some file errors which will need repair before attempting anything else.
Your CheckSUR shows the following errors.....
Code:

while the CBS logs show no sign of an SFC /SCANNOW having been run at all, that I can see :(
I'm also a little confused by the timestamps of the relevant files

There are however, some serious errors in the logs...

I'm not sure this is going to be fixable outside of a repair or clean install.

I'll do some research and come back to you. - shout if you haven't heard in 24 hours

I ran the update reset tool, but, as expected, it made no difference...same error message. A fresh install would be difficult at best...or at least extremely time consuming (re-installing the programs that would need to be re-installed...)...I would hope there would be a way to correct the update tool.

I don't honestly know what difference it will make - but I'll post a fix for your CheckSUR errors in a bit, and we'll see what happens. to an SFC after that

I've uploaded a file - celaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=936736BB8FCEB92F&id=936736BB8FCEB92F%21526
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
This should create a folder C:\celaa

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\celaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\celaa
or
DIR E:\celaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\celaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Then reboot again, and run the CheckSUR tool again, and post the new CheckSUR.log file.

Looks like CheckSUR is now clear - but there are still problems with the SFC.....

OK - here's the new file...

I've uploaded a file - celac.zip - to my SkyDrive at https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=936736BB8FCEB92F&id=936736BB8FCEB92F%21526
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
This should create a folder C:\celac

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\celac
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\celac
or
DIR E:\celac

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\celac <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

That's interesting - and worrying.
The replacement of the same file from two different sources has failed.

Please run the following commands, and post the results....

DIR C:\Windows\cmitrust.dll /s
ICACLS C:\Windows\cmitrust.dll /T

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

I can see!
OK - I'm not sure why that happens, but it does occasionally. I suspect that there is a problem with the folder integrity, or that the WMI service it actually locking it out.
Often, you simply need to close the CMD window, open it again, and run the command again.

However, it's enough to be able to see the problem.
Please run the following command and we'll get directly to the problem file.

ICACLS C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-cmitrustinfoinstallers_1122334455667788_6.1.7600.16385_none_edf9e9f8d0b878f4 /T

OK...so I went in and claimed ownership of 50 odd files that had no listed owner. It processed. Screenshot in next post.
