I can read through the smilies - don't worry about it :)

Folders throughout windows were labeled with no ownership...in sys32, 64, the whole temp folder.... The above is after that. As an aside, I tried re-running the update...still no dice...same error.

Gawd help us now - the ownership on many items should definitely NOT be anything but TrustedInstaller - it's one of the security devices used by the system
Unfortunately, doing a wholesale ownership change to Trustedinstaller would also break many things.

I'm not sure whether a System Restore would work -but it's worth a try if you have a recent enough restore point to go back to.

It seems to have done a lot of work during the run - but the result hasn't changed (not surprisingly)

I am re-installing Win-7. I did find the problem, though. One of my drives...not the boot drive...was bad (Hitachi 1tb). It showed up, and looked OK until you tried to manipulate items on the drive. Wouldn't re-format, couldn't do anything with the partition...even in an external usb enclosure. Odd failure...never seen this without a virus, but my other 2 drives are clean (can't say for sure that the Hitachi wasn't infected, but I doubt it)...that one is going back to Hitachi with an RMA... Thanks for the multiple attempts.
