Dear Forum,

I am in the situation where I can not cut and paste some files and folders from my desktop to other destinations.

It comes up with the message 'File Access Denied'

It also says that I require permission to move it. It says that I require the computers permission to move the file to another location.

I am in the situation that I am trying to move some files to another location. In some cases there is one instance of the files - as per what I am posting.

I just wish to move one file as per the items on my post. I am not too sure if it is the 'take ownership' instance of which I do not know what to do.

Can some one please assist me so that I can remove these items from my desktop to my external hard drive? I am not that crash hot on computers

Hi Melissa

Is this on your own personal computer? Are you the Administrator?

Yes I am the administrator.

It was very odd that it would not let me move them.

I am worried of what group or user name to use to give ownership.

I am logged in under Melissa & Grant - (Mainly Melissa's Uni)

I noticed that on the External Hard Drive there is one there that is CREATOR OWNER - this now has no security options.

How do you ensure that you do not take over such items like the System Volume folder?

I also now have a lock on my Found.000 - how do you remove the lock?

Thanks for looking up other people's issues - I am just hesitant of doing it myself.

I am still having issues - I have looked at several forums - some that even offer a shortcut to download a link to a shortcut to take ownership of files.

Are they safe?

I am now so confused - after following the instructions of one forum as I was too afraid to post on here - I am in a big mess.

I have allowed myself to be a user - selected User and gone from there to select my name.

I now can not move anything to the external hard drive.

Can someone please assist me?

1. My External Hard Drive is coming up as red in the preview screen
2. It informs me that the Recycle Bin on my External Hard Drive is now

Thank you - after what I have seen on Google - looks very confronting.

I also do not wish to download anything that I am confident in using.

I also do not want to go into any settings that I am not supposed to be fiddling with.

I was just contemplating giving access to everyone - but then I am not sure that would eliminate moving items from the desktop to the external hard disk drive.

Well written link.

Will go through step by step - slowly but surely. Think that has been my issue as well.

As long as I do not take anything over in the C:

I may be stupid - by all admissions I think I am.

I can not transfer just about anything as of now and it looks like after taking the administrators (Owner) of my external hard disk drive - it is saying that my recycle bin is corrupt.

I know that someone commented that they are no expert - neither am I. I know it is also hard to diagnose via this medium.

I found a way of recording the problem steps on my computer -- but with the screen snips - I hope that I have not gone that overboard.

I have some screen snips that I am not too sure if I have the settings are correct.

I am not sure whether to set up another forum question or just give up on computers.

If anyone could try and see if they could help me further so I can put all my information on the external disk drive - that would be great.

Kind regards

Melissa

Hi Melissa, I'm a total "know nothing" computer wise, having just got an HP Pavilion Win 7 desk top computer to replace my old XP one.......so being vague , doesn't the external hard drive appear in My Computer as D drive, whatever?...........which means you should be able to transfer files from various sources to it?.....ignore this if it's not applicable.

I might be totally wrong, but if you've created files in Pictures or Documents etc, you should be able to drag them to the left side and to a folder wherever it's located.

I have a Seagates 1 terabyte external hard drive (USB), and I down load files to it for safe keeping etc......the ext HDD when plugged in appears as drive D in the listing on the left hand side of the screen, same as a flash drive when I plug it into any USB port.
Ian.

I also have a Seagate 1TB - F: Drive in the case of this question that I posed.

I do drag the items (folders and file) and gain the message of 'File Access Denied'. To a person that does not know that much about computers - this can be alarming.

I am looking at moving quite a bit of data to the drive. I am not too sure if the permissions are correct or if I give access to Everyone - which I really do not wish to do - but may have to in this case.

I very much appreciate the time someone took in trying to assist me.

People have posted links - but I feel very stupid as I still am unsure.

The Recycle Bin error is of a concern - perhaps I will post another forum regarding corrupt recycle bin

I observed that someone came to this forum to assist me.

I ended up deleting all the files from the external drive recycle bin to assist me in not getting the message again.

I accidently pressed "Yes" - so there is no going back now.

I am engaging other errors now - but I seem to be cursed.

I will come back to it, when I am feeling a little better.

"you learn from your mistakes'.

I do want to get better on the computer

Hi Mel, it's possible you have altered something in your settings on the computer, I'm a noob at computers, so that's just a guess.

You could try transferring single files to the ext HDD, IE don't transfer a folder with multiple levels of folders and files within them.

When I had trouble with my previous computer and tried to dump the whole int HDD contents to an external HDD, the computer blocked it and any folder that had layers of folders and files etc, and in the end I had to just transfer single files one by one to the ext HDD.....took forever.

If all else fails unload all your files to the HDD that you can, or to a CD or USB flash drive if it will allow you, then bite the bullet and re-install all the OS and soft ware etc......start from the beginning with default settings......but..... MAKE A NOTE OF WHAT SETTINGS YOU CHANGE....this is important, (in my case for me that is), as when something goes pear shaped you need to be able to go back and re-change that particular setting.

BTW, I wasn't aware that you have a recycle bin on an ext HDD.....when I delete files from the ext HDD (drive F) or any of the drives they go to the recycle bin on my computer.......that is when you can re-evaluate your decision to delete and recover them later.

You must be very sure when you decide to empty your re-cycle bin, 'cos that's when they're gone forever.
Ian.

I consider you a new friend - I am up at this hour - worried about my silly external hard drive and all it's contents. What really matters is that you are alive and breathing.

I was in a coma a while back. I am now writing a book. I am on limited drugs - but heck that is life.

I appreciate anyone that has half a brain cell - I sure do not.

The people on here have treated me great - I have done silly stuff and I am surprised that I am not banned.

I drive the manufacturers mad - But - in the end I brought the stuff, most the time they are just googling it and have the only the bare equipment to assist - I am led to believe.

Thanks and I hope that my External Hard Drive does not become a door stop - all my work

Hi, we all need some help sometime.

BTW, looking at your post #12, the file listing looks like you have a lot of links to various areas, these will not be transferred as files and saved to a HDD....as far as I know.

Hi Mel, I've learned one thing about computers, don't mess with the settings and it'll function as the makers planned it.......I know hardly anything about the workings of a computer, so I leave it to itself........programs usually work well when they have an operating system that is free from viruses, so I use Nortons to scan anything that I want to look at and don't open anything that I don't know the origin of, especially emails......all the best,
Ian.

If you ask most on here - they do not trust Norton. I must admit - they are not the best. Make sure you keep your updates with software - I lost a lot of back ups thanks to them.

They do provide on line support on you computer - but will only stick to their program.

I totally agree. Keep it simple stupid - The good old KISS principle in future for me.

Could cost a fortune in not just time - but effort fixing it yourself. Sometimes - some things are just beyond your control. I do not claim to be an expert - willing to try. But should know my limits.

Thanks again,

Melissa

Hi, like any anti virus software, Nortons can only combat an attack when it has the virus type in it's listing.....any new one and you are open to attack until it get dealt with.....sometimes after it's done it's job.

I may be wrong on that assumption, as that would be closing the door after the horse has bolted etc, but if they have something that detects the virus "fingerprints" as opposed to the actual program, then I suppose one good AV softeware package is like the next.....price accordingly.

At the average 'Net browser level, $100 a year subscription to an AV software package is probably the limit to what you would go to in order to get peace of mind, unless you were really into some serious computing activities and had to have total protection, then the sky's the limit.

With Virus attacks, you only know when you are at risk when get the problems that have not been identified.
Ian.

Are you the local admin? Meaning if you were to go Computer>right-click>manage>users>Administrator. You would see your name here? To copy anything you will need this type of permissions, not only on the external, but on your local machine.
