Upgraded to Windows7/64bit yesterday and unable to install USB HP Inkjet Printer.

Followed procedure at HP site and it does not seem to work.
Initially, after the upgrade, Windows/Devices and Printers showed
a fax printer. I tried to enable that as a printer but that obviously would not work as it referred to setting up a fax modem. So I deleted the device.

HP site also recommended performing a windows 7 update (which would presumably reload the required printer driver and then go through the procedure (disconnect printer from USB port, powerdown the printer, restart computer, connect printer to USB, power on the printer. ). Nothing happens. Printer device does not show up on Printer and Devices.

What should I try next?

Thanks,
Sinchi

Hi Sinchi, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Please could you tell the exact model of your printer?

Re: Windows 7 and HP printer

Thanks for responding,

The printer model is HP Business Inkjet 1100.

It was previously used in Windows XP and Windows Vista OS's. For Vista, the HP driver website said to use the HP1000 printer driver which was downloaded and worked fine with Vista.

Is Win7 able to identify this printer and load the proper driver.
HP says the driver for this printer is in Win7. Follow their stated
restart procedure and Win 7 should recognize the printer. It does not seem to happen.

Is there a way to manually download the HP1000 driver to Win7 and have Win7 recognize the printer?

Thanks

Business Inkjet 1100 has no native Windows 7 drivers, which is a bit funny because both models 1000 and 1200 have. If you want to spend some time with trying, you could try the method described in this post: http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware...xp-mode-hp-photosmart-8750-a.html#post1112550

Just change the printer model told in that post (Photosmart 8700) to Business Inkjet 1000 (HP). It should work for you.

re: Win 7 and HP1100 Printer

Do not really want to go into XP mode.

Someone suggested a workaround, eg. Go to Printers and Devices and click on install a printer even though a USB port is being used. For the port, enter the number of the USB port. And go from there.

Any comments on that.

No, I did not mean you to go to XP Mode. I ment that you could try to install that Business Inkjet on Windows 7 as described in the beginning of that post!

I believe that's your best shot.

Kari,

I carefully read the link for the HP8700 user that you wrote.

So, in my case I would add a local printer using port LPT1.

Then use Windows Update button. (Where is the Windows Update button?). Then I should get a list of the pertinent drivers. I will be looking for the HP1000 driver to load.

Then connect printer to the USB port at the proper time after restart and the Seven should recognize it and go from there?

What window should I be in when press the Windows update button so I just see printer drivers?

OK.

First, let me offer my apology if I was not clear enough before, when linking you to that page. I forgot to tell you that those instructions were not to install a printer to XP Mode, instead I was offering that member an alternative where the printer is installed in Windows Seven.

The fourth image from above shows when to press that Windows Update button, and where it is. The first dotted line of the instructions asks to first create a system restore point, to be able to return to the current Windows Seven setup if something goes wrong. It should not go wrong, in fact I am 99.999 % sure of that but I am overly cautious. ;)

If you do not know how to create a restore point but you feel it's better to prepare to that 0.001%, here's an easy to read and understand tutorial on creating a restore point: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/697-system-restore-point-create.html

Kari,

Was able to perform the procedure you indicated. Here's what happened. I loaded the HP Business Inkjet 1000 driver. I followed the instructions and the driver loaded. The printer icon appeared with the printer name I gave it in Devices and Printers. The program did not tell me when to connect the printer and turn its power on. So I connected it to a USB port and turned the printer power on.

I then chose a short Word file to print. The file is now in the print queue but there is printer error sign and the printer will not print. The printer will print a manual test page by holding the printer power button down and pressing the printer red "X" button once, so the printer functions ok.

I have set a System Restore point just before I started the procedure, but I have not restored yet.

Please advise.

Thanks so far. I'm relieved W7 recognized my printer at last.

Kari,

I forgot to mention. After the driver loaded and the printer was connected and there was a printer error, I restarted the computer.
After rebooting opening Windows, the printer still had an error and would not print.

Keri,

More symptoms: If there are no print documents in queue, the printer icon says "Ready". As soon as I try to print something, such as a test page, "Printer Error" appears. If I cancel the print, the printer icon says "Ready". ????

Additional symptoms:

When I cancel the contents of the print queue, the printer icon says "Ready". As soon as I attempt to send a file it ends up in the print queue and and printer icon indicates "Error".

OK. One more reboot. This time, turn the printer off and disconnect the USB cable from computer. Reboot computer. When computer is fully rebooted, turn printer on. When printer is fully booted, connect the cable.

Come back and tell what happened.

Kari,

Thanks for responding. Yes, I had found that HP site which gave explicit instructions for my printer. I had system restore point set up, so I tried the HP procedure twice. Same failed result: Printer would setup as Ready but fail when I attempted to send and something was in the Queue.

This was my wife's computer and she was anxious so I gave up on the on the HP Business Inkjet 1100 and bought her a new printer, which also has problems but installs and works. I will use the HP 1100 on another computer that has XP Pro.
