Ok MS, Apple has just applied some serious pricing pressure for upgrading. Due in September, current Mac owners can upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard for only $29!! Now, I know I know, the OS's are very different and I don't expect MS to go THAT low for Vista owners...but come on! You just KNOW the MS folks are cussing a bit now.. They must have just dropped another notch lower on their planned pricing scheme as a result. Can you imagine?? Upgrading to 7 from Vista for that price???

i totally agree. i really think that Microsoft needs to seriously take a moment and rethink things for a bit. especially with the low blows that apple dealt them during their WWDC today.

they need to do something.

To me right now Snow Leopard looks like a pay for service pack rather than an upgrade OS. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of changes inside of it just a lot of tweaks and updates for newer hardware. Most of the stuff I have read and seen from Apple today is nothing new just them slinging the dirt calling names just so the fanboys have something to write about, I wish that Steve Jobs would've shown up that would've been good, but maybe he knew they didnt have a really good line up so he just sat back and watched. I hope it all works for them.

true. now that you put it that way. fanboys are def going to see it as a lot of major changes.

to me a lot of the things they showed that were updates, were updates that they've been far behind on that most other units already have.

with their laptops its the addition of an SD card slot. laptops have had this for quite some time now.

the iphone finally gets cut/copy/paste and landscape mode. and the feature most dumbphones have already - mms.

nothing to really shake a stick at IMHO

We see more of the attitude from the top of Apple ... wonder where all of the fanboys get it? If Apple does it for their OS, i.e., want to make it better, thats cool because its on a Mac. BUT if MS does the same thing (although not really, i know), its just stupid and bash-worthy. Market share...anyone? Market share? Interesting. If productivity was the big advantage of the Mac platform...then why are the world's industries using PCs? hmm...

At least CNET, which can sometimes be for Mac/Apple what MSNBC is to Obama...will call Apple out on this...well, almost:

Maybe this is just some long buried pet peeve of mine, but aren't y'all sick of this?? They add the word "snow" in front of their updated OS and its new and exciting and worthy of a damn press conference. Maybe MS should have just stuck with the root "Vista" and now we could have "Buena Vista" as the next big thing out of Redmond... but i digress.

Doesn't it strike as you a bit of whiny school yard look-how-funny-we-can-be with that pic of the word Vista crossed out?

This "new OS" is just a way for them to charge money for what are essentially the same things Microsoft gives out for free on Microsoft Update.

I have an iPod touch, which I actually really like, but yet to upgrade to the 3.0 firmware they're going to charge me $20 or something.

Is Snow Leopard anywhere near as much an upgrade as 7 is to either Vista or XP? It seems mostly to just be 64-bit and multicore use.

It's more than that, but it isn't as much of an update as 7. They did supposedly update all the system applications such as mail, etc. But yeah, adding 64-bit support and Exchange support (after blasting Microsoft, ironic much?) doesn't seem to be much of an update.

And they dropped 6GB from the Install package. Can they please cut iTunes down to size sometime soon? That thing is still a hog on Windows.

Eh, MS did that with Outlook Expre- er, Windows Live Essentials.

I like the Apple commercials where they brag about running Office. Exchange doesn't make much sense... but whatever.

And they dropped 6GB from the Install package.
Win7 is a 3gb install disc image and installed is 11 gb, a lot of which is backups. Most games are bigger than that... I have no problem with how big Windows is.

iTunes is one of the most horrible programs ever. Even worse than RealPlayer ever was. Apple should cut off all the graphical skin crap and just use default Windows systems, that'd take much less memory and be more compatible. iTunes always gets that thing where the UI turns black when the memory is being used. And on top of that, it runs stealth services in the background. WMP 12 == win.

Hi all

Who CARES what Apple does -- if you like (and can afford) Apple buy and enjoy. :D

I'd like to see some of the Fanboys using (or even attempting) to use their shiny new Macbooks connected to complicated diagnostic testing and service gear on an off shore Gas Platform or measuring data running along the San Andreas Fault.

Whatever else people might say about MS and Windows NO OTHER system can connect to so many completely different and often very specialized pieces of hardware.

For those that think the price of W7 is going to be too high -- just join technet for a 20% initial discount (search GOOGLE for the discount PROMO codes).

You'll get loads of LEGITIMATE software including W7 ultimate retail at release at a CHEAPER price than the retail copy of W7.

Cheers
jimbo

M/S don't need to do anything, Apple is a minor player and will always remain so,

Remember M/S is a software creator, Apple is a hardware manufacturer, that just tagged a system onto their products.
