USB charging problems

Hi..

I've been having an ongoing problem trying to charge various devices (smartphones, tablets etc) via USB. The devices seem to connect to Windows without a problem and I'm able to browse the file system of the device in order to move/copy files between them and Windows but charging seems to get interrupted every so often and a few seconds later, charging starts again. During the time the charging stops, I'm still able to browse the file system so the devices are staying connected, it's just charging that is affected.

I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling devices and USB controllers but that hasn't helped.

I've also tested the same cables when connected to a wall charger and didn't experience any problems.

I've used the same cables to charge the same devices from a different computer and again, that went fine.

Things seem to be pointing to a hardware error of which there are no clues in the event log or device manager. However, as a test, I tried charging on XP which runs as a dual boot option on the computer and that was fine too so it seems to be something specific to this installation of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1.

I've read an article which suggests to delete upper and lower filters registry values from the USB class string. Both filters were present but empty so I backed up the key and deleted them but that hasn't made any difference.

Kinda struggling for the next things to try so if anyone suggest anything that would be cool.

Thank you :)

How many devices are you trying to charge at the one time. USB output voltage & amperage is limited. You also need to allow for keyboards & mice consuming power as well.

The fact that you can do what you want to on one computer but not another, has nothing to do with the operating system, but is probably limited by the motherboard.

Are the USB drivers properly installed? Are you trying to charge on USB 2 or 3 ports? Did you try other ports?

I usually only try to charge one device at a time....I have just tested it with various devices just to see if the same happens. I do use a wireless USB mouse and keyboard and a USB Xbox controller is connected to the computer.

I appreciate the differences between motherboards on different computers but as I mentioned in my post, everything works fine on the dual boot option.

Drivers are installed and I'm using 2.0 ports. I have tried all ports as well.

Everything used to work fine...I had no issues charging phones. I just can't understand what has gone wrong.

Thinking a format/reinstall is required here.

Try un-plug PC from power for a minute and two, and then loading defaults in BIOS (either first screen or exit menu).

Thanks for the replies.

I tried resetting BIOS defaults but that didn't help.

Format and reinstall sorted it :)

Gah...spoke too soon!! Started off fine after the first few phone connections after the reinstall but it's started to drop/reconnect the charge again.

Back to the drawing board. Maybe the ports are buggered, maybe the psu and maybe I didn't test for long enough in XP?

Been nagging the missus for a new computer so this may help the cause. This Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 with DDR2-800MHz RAM has served me well but I'm missing out on some of the latest games plus a bit more oomph would be nice with an SSD drive to boot.

Every cloud ;)

Gonna restore the image I took yesterday before formatting as that'll save me reinstalling all my apps, sorting out the other user profiles etc.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. If anyone can think of anything else, please let me know.

Thought I'd give the computer a proper clean as I haven't done it for a little while. Plenty of dust had collected over what must be two years since the last strip down and clean and we've also had some work done on the house since and that created a lot of fine floating debris.

Anyway, just connected my phone and so far, so good.....although I did think that after the Windows reinstall.

Will just have to wait and see and will continue to nag the missus :)
