USB Ports not detected at W7 Login screen

I am using Windows 7, and suddenly my USB ports are not detected. By this I mean that keyboard, mouse and other usb ports do not detect connected devices. I have no way of updating drivers, that I am aware of. I have already tried booting into safe mode, with the same results. I have a dual boot computer that also has Ubuntu Linux, which does not have that problem.

I am looking for all help that would solve my issue. Said in kindness..

Just a suggestion, maybe specify what you're asking if OP has updated? Like are you asking if Windows Updates have been applied, or...?

Here's my version of that question for OP: have you updated any other hardware recently? I feel like this is a longshot because you'd probably have mentioned it already, but some new hardware (particularly more recent processors and mobos) doesn't recognize USB2 ports by default, whereas Win7 doesn't recognize USB3 ports by default without drivers being installed. So if, say, you're using USB3 ports now whereas you previously used USB2 for some reason, and you didn't have those USB3 drivers before, that could be part of the issue.

It may be the chipset drivers. In order for you to reinstall those you'll have to use a PS/2 mouse connected to the back of the computer providing you have a PS/2 port. If you have two PS/2 port than you can use a mouse and keyboard. Once your able to navigate inside the computer, you can see if there are any yellow exclamation marks in device manager, and/or download the motherboard's chipset driver, uninstall the old one in Safe Mode and reinstall the driver. Once that is down try a USB device.

In your computer specs, you need to be a little more descriptive. I don't know what you have there. Laptop or desktop, make and model, etc.

New MB requires USB drivers that are not on a installed windows or on the installation disk.

Please explain where did the disk came from or how did you installed win 7

I haven't updated in a few years. Needed only for offline use with programs that worked only. USB worked before. Thinking that somehow something accessed drive remotely, and modified ports. I checked USB ports in bios, and everything seems fine, but could be wrong.

OK, I will try the PS/2 mouse, to see if it allows

If it works now with the BIOS setting change then perhaps that's what the issue was.

What was the BIOS change you made?

No Bios change. Tried a wireless mouse, but same results. Not seeing mouse. Will still look at getting the PS/2 mouse.

You can get a PS/2 mouse on eBay or at a second hand store if they have 'em. Once you do, you'll need to burn the USB and/or chipset drivers to the CD and install from there. Obviously can't use a USB stick.

What you mean by "just the installation"?

As you have mouse and keyboard under Linux, the problem isn't on your USB ports
The problem is on the installed Windows.

What is the model of your Asus computer?

Please edit your profile with ALL the hardware specs.
