Solved USB Power Output

HI;

I'm trying to figure out if the USB ports on my Sony Vaio VPC CW17FX output at full power all the time or if there is a setting with the energy saver.

I'm trying to figure out if my phone charges slower via the USB on my Vaio vs the wall.

It's my impression that USB ports on newer hardware have enough power to charge the phone as fast as the wall?

But I don't know if these are full power ports being a Laptop and / or if there are any energy saver type of programs in place that may limit it.

USB supplies +5V, if that is lower than the output of the wall charger it will be slower or not charge at all.
Go to control Panel/Power options/adavnced settings/USB settings. Make sure USB Selective Suspend is Disabled.

The selective Suspend was set to enabled, I've changed it now.

The wall charger is 5V @ .7A. I've had it plugged into the wall charger for about 15-20 minutes and it added 10% to the battery. I previously had it plugged into the laptop for over a half hour and only got 2% added.

Hopefully the selective suspend will help.

You're welcome Jaimie. That should let the USB be on whenever the machine is powerd on. Yup the USB has a lower amp rating than the wall charger. My plain non-smart cell takes 2-3 hours to charge via USB.

A standard USB port (NOT PASSIVE HUB PORT!!) is normally rated at 500mA (.5A).
I would recommend you invest in an active Hub. Their individual ports will often deliver in excess of 500mA - best check for a particular brand. I like Logitech.

Also treat the Device manager current load readings with a degree of caution especially when using passive hubs.

I just plug it into the computer for charging as it is convenient, I can use a wall charger.

After I changed that setting, it's making a huge difference. It might still be slower than the wall charger, but at the rate it's going I bet it will charge the phone in less than 2 hours now being plugged into the laptop. It's gone up almost 25% in around a half hour or so. That is a lot faster than what it did earlier.

Maybe get your eyes checked. I have written (.5A) NOT (5A). As an Electrical Engineer I sort of understand that.

Rubbish. This is an old thread - are you trolling?

I made reference to 500mA and .5A - same thing.
Also what is "satting voltages under 1 amp..." supposed to mean.
Here are some unit symbols that may help you.
Electrical units of measurment (V,A,©,W,...)
See A for Ampere (amps), V for volts. You can use the prefix symbol if you like and when sensible. eg. You indeed would probably write 0.001A as 1 mA.
