Using power supply outside of computer

If you are using it outside the case it means that you will be testing something with it,if you feel like it just plug a fan or something similar into one of the molex connecters and you have a load on the PSU.
I have used this method on very old and very new PSU's without any problems.

Have a Happy Birthday Today

Good idea, and thanks, althought I have to wait several more hours for the 30th.

That loads the +12v section only. There are also +3.3v , +5v etc. Sorry if this sounds like a lecture or something but to each his own. I don't recommend doing it but its a free world just be advised of the risks. You can potentially damage what was a perfectly good power supply.
