Volume muted after wake from sleep

Good day everyone,

I have been looking around the board and internet for some time now in regards to this issue, if you have a good link post it here.
My current issue is that everytime my computer goes to sleep, the volume in Windows 7 gets muted, I dont mind this part. What I do mind is when the computer wakes up, the volume si still muted. I am currently trying to make this media center pc almost keyboard free, but everytime it wakes up it stays muted until I umute it on the volume control in th taskbar.
I have updated my drivers for the video and sound card (ATI) and BIOS yesterday. I cant seem to find any setting to change this function as it looks like a function from windows.
Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like a audio driver setting. Windows itself definitely doesn't mute the computer.

Open device manager and post the device you have, its driver date and its IRQ - filter the Device Manager window by resource via the menu at the top.

Hello everyone,

I am posting to update the issue as I found a solution and I hope this solution can help others with the same problem. The issue of the sound going mute when windows 7 was going to sleep and waking up muted was caused by a conflict in drivers which did not reflect in device manager or any part of windows. This is in part due to my motherboard having both Realtek and ATI equipment for sound. I replicated the problem during a clean install after installing the Realtek HD audio codecs, Realtek ATI HDMI audio driver and the ATI HDMI audio driver provided by AMD with the Catalyst drivers.

To resovle the issue:

1. Remove all the Realtek software, codecs and drivers using Control panel > Add or remove programs.

2. Remove the ATI HDMI audio driver by running the ATI driver instalaltion software, selecting uninstall, custom, and selecting any audio driver present.

3. Ensure no audio device is installed in device manager. Reboot.

4. Let windows 7 install the generic microsoft drivers for the audio devices.

5. Verify correct installation of generic microsoft drivers in device manager.

6. Do a google search for "Realtek ATI HDMI audio" and select the link taking you to the Realtek download webpage.

7. ONLY download and install the Realtek ATI HDMI audio driver. Do not install any other software form Realtek or ATI.

8. Reboot and the problem should be gone.

This issue was replicated with the latest drivers (dated DEC 2010). It seems that the moetherboard or windows gets confused as to what audio device to use and ends up muting all to stop any conflicts.

I know this is old but to all who are having this problem currently and have had no luck on google this was driving me crazy since I want my family to be able to use this without having to change settings.

My setup:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
AMD Radeon HD 5450
HDMI going from my AMD card to my Vizio TV

What I did to finally fix this:

1. First I followed this link - How To Disable Automatic Driver Installation In Windows 7 / Vista

2. Opened device manager, went to sounds, uninstalled all drivers for each sound option I had.

3. Downloaded CCC 12.3 - AMD Catalyst 12.3 pre WHQL driver download from Guru3D.com

I didnt check with 12.4 but I bet it would work.

4. Opened it and did an uninstall of AMD software.

5. After reboot; went back to this link: How To Disable Automatic Driver Installation In Windows 7 / Vista

and did the opposite. at this point windows didn't try to install any drivers. You can check this by going to device manager and looking for the warning symbols.

6. Installed CCC 12.3

This fixed my problem of losing sound when I would turn the tv on and off.

7. I then went back into device manager and installed the drivers for my other sound features that were not part of AMD.

I tried to follow the directions above, but to my surprise Windows still auto installed the audio drivers.

I had installed CCC 12.8 and found out that I can't get the sound to come out from my TV (Samsung connected with a HDMI cable). I decided to uninstall CCC and follow the directions above... it didn't work! So after removing CCC 12.8 and installing 12.3, I manually updated the driver and remapped the driver location to the CCC 12.3 folder.

1. Unpack the 12.3 file;
2. In Device Manager, under [Sound, video and game controllers], select the device you want to change (in my case [AMD High Definition Audio Device]);
3. Right click on the device and click [Update Driver Software...];
4. On the new window click on [Browse my computer for driver software];
5. Click on [Browse], by the drop-down box and find the path for the unpacked 12.3 file. Click next and the new/old driver should install.

After I confirmed that my sound was coming out of the TV and that my device was showing ready, under the [Playback devices] window (before the fix my device was showing "Not plugged in"), I installed CCC 12.9 BETA. So far everything has been working how it was designed to.
