W7 will not boot - sorry for another thread

Which tutorial are you working from? There's none I know of that say to put in the dated old chipset CD to install drivers. It says in bold red print in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to only get drivers from Windows Updates so you know you have the drivers Win7 wants and not some old drivers from a disk that's dated once its pressed.

If missing after all Updates then drivers should come from the manufacturer's website, not a disk.

Why refuse an Nvidia Display driver update? Apparently it is the one Win7 wants.

Sometimes it just astounds me how after five years and literally millions we've helped achieve great Win7 installs there are still those who are stuck in XP methods in a driver-complete OS that provides its own drivers. But at least for the most part it isn't the common belief here in the forums any longer, as it was for years.

Just for information.
I have two computer running nVIDIA cards.
A GTX 460 AND A GTX 770 and both are using drivers that were recommended by Windows 7 update and installed using Windows 7 Updates and they both work well.
They are not the newest but they are the newest that Microsoft have tested that will work with Windows 7.
If you get the nVIDIA drivers from nVIDIA you will get the newest drivers but they might not agree with Windows 7.

I apologize. I truly was trying to follow the tutorial and did see the bold in red. I admittedly am just "okay" with computers, and thought I needed to update some of the drivers that came with the MB that I originally installed. I was obviously very wrong and didn't mean to not follow your tutorial. Sometimes I have a hell of a time getting my brain wrapped around computer procedures and tech related issues. I just reread the bold red from the tutorial and your previous post and it makes complete sense...I do feel like a bit of an idiot.

I was just being cautious about the Nvidia, as I mentioned in my previous post. Thank you for letting me know it should not be an issue.

I truly appreciate the help that you and others have provided so far. Sometimes communication can get missed in "posts" and "emails", and that could very well be my fault. I'm sure a 5 min. conversation would have cleared it up. I have no idea about XP and W7 as is relates to drivers so appreciate you mentioning that in the post.

Well...I think I've isolated the update that has caused all the problems. It's the Nvidia update for my graphics card. I used system restore to isloate the last 3 updates I did. I went through each one and Nvidia is the only one that causes the probelm. I went to Nvidia website to get a driver and followed the install procedures. I found a guide that lists the steps and the problem came back.

I did this before I read your most recent post.

This is so strange and I may need to go to Nvidia forums, since it doesn't seem to be a W7 issue.

Thankyou Layback, that is a great tutorial and almost identical to the one I was using. I got through all the steps except for #7 (Unistall Nvidia Drivers). There aren't any drivers to uninstall. I was able to delete the necessary driver folder by number (Step 3). In my last System Restore and took the computer to a period when no Nvidia Drivers were installed.

I should probably go back to Greg's most recent post and start from there and then do the Nvidia tutorial.

Absolutely keep following Greg's suggestions.
I just posted that so you could double check your installation process of the nVIDIA driver.

Hi Greg,

I've followed your steps from the last post (rereading many many times). I couldn't get my computer to do a system restore far enough back to prior to W7 installation, so I started over with a clean install.

The Nvidia is still causing the problem. I came across a thread in these forums and I'm wondering if it is a bad graphics card.
http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-...boot-after-installing-nvidia-gpu-drivers.html

That's a high dollar item to potentially go out. I'm going to give the company a call to see if they have any tech support.

Have you tried all available Display drivers, first from Windows Update, then from Nvidia's own Support Downloads webpage letting them scan your PC for driver needed or manually finding it?

Greg, yes I did do that. No luck

I called the company of the graphics card and they didn't have too many suggestions. I tried a different PCI slot on the MB and that didn't work. They offered to send a replacement. I figured it couldn't hurt and will give that a go. He also mentioned it could be a bad power supply, which seems a bit odd.

It would be handy if you would fill in your System Specs completely.

Video cards draw a lot of power. If the power supply isn't of quality and the proper watts and amps the video card will have problems.

What exactly is the power supply you are using.
The power supply is the heart and blood of a computer system.

Hi Layback,

I updated my system specs. I'm at work so I have a few things missing. This is my PSU:
CORSAIR HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 GOLD Certified Modular.

I did quite a bit of research in the flight sim community (this is what I use the computer for) and I "think" the PSU is sufficient.

Well...the new graphics card arrived and everything works great. I guess they don't make my model anymore and sent me the lates,t which was a pleasant suprise. I downloaded the drivers and have absolutely no problems.

Thank you all for the help and support you provided. I can see there is quite a bit of dedication and support on this forum. I've never seen so many helpful tutorials and thank you all for the patience.

Cheers, trane251
