Solved WD my passport not initializing

Um looks like there is probably a fault with the controller for the device Rashman because of that I/O error that is there.

Personally I am not a great fan of WD stuff I much prefer Seagate drives to be honest the Freeagent comes with a removable dock / cable and is great for external docking if need be.

Imation have some really reasonably priced externals around at the moment I saw some in Office Works for $39 just the other day - 320GB .

Any other suggestions besides return it? ...

Was hoping to avoid being out of pocket for the shipping on the warranty, but looks like it's the only thing left.

Hi there
WD disks -- W(hat a) D(isaster).
Avoid like the plague -- when it comes to Disk storage cheapness doesn't always pay - especially if you want to store large amounts of data on them.

What you can try first is to in the disk management where you don't have a letter assigned right mouse click and choose change letter -- pick one from the drop down and the disk should then mount. You can then initialize (should be already formatted though) and create simple volume or if it assigns a letter it should be ready for use.

New Disks shouldn't give a problem. -- If it's a USB disk try swapping USB slots --and if you have a USB3 connector connect to that instead of the USB 2 even if the disk is USB2.

If it's an internal HDD try swapping around the SATA connectors on your Mobo and ensure all connections are properly attached -- loose connections will cause data failure in any case.

Cheers
jimbo

Sorry for the late reply Rashman and well stuff happens mate personally I think having to pay for returns stinks - if you make a fair enough case for yourself maybe they will reimburse you that too.

Go for the Seagates they are best in my own view.

Have a look at this I always get my stuff from here although at the moment they only have one Seagate Seagate STBX1000300 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Drive [STBX1000300] - $115.00 : PC Case Gear but these folks will pay for the return using that as credit for anything else you want to get.
Don't even think about the LaCies and the Toshies I'm not real sure of either and the Hitachis have just been bought out by Toshiba.

Another place you will find then is here and the Imation 3.0USB 320GB I saw for $39 just the other day Data Storage | Officeworks

Anyway you might be close enough to drive there:)
