What's your memory assessment speed?

Status
Not open for further replies.
My system is about a year old, running a good ol' Core 2 Duo and some DDR2 RAM

Processor is a Intel E8400 OC'd to 3.6... a very safe OC for this processor and haven't needed to push it any farther

RAM is Corsair Dominator, 1066 running at some slightly lower than stock timings, 5-4-4-12, 2T

thats a good score for ddr2, my ddr3 score with 8gb 1600 tops is about 8300mb/s and my 4gb 1800 was tops of about 8700mb/s! thats a good figure.

i have a e8400 sitting on my shelf, the most i got out of it was 4.22 on air cooling (lapped though) they are a great cpu and have alot of potential.

so how can I change and check memory timing ?

you will have to enter into your bios. GA i think is Gigabyte i think, i dont have any experience with their overclocking or using the bios.

find your memory cock settings (usually in the same section as your fsb and cpu speed settings) and there is usually a section for memory timings.

a good idea is to find out the specs for the ram you have, especially the voltage for the amount of memory. EG: my g.skill is 1.4v-1.6v with 2gbx2 (4gb) and 1.6v-1.8v for2gbx4 (8gb).

if you dont quite know what your doing with the timings just use google for help like i did, you will find hundreds of searches relating to overclocking guids that are really helpful.

if you dont already know voltage is the MOST imortant thing to be carful with. most cpu's have safety features to avoid overvoltage and overheating but ram does not have protection so it is possible to fry your memory (from experience) like i said google is your friend.

:D Rick.

the timtings is a little high for ddr2. most quality ram timtings are around 5/5/5/12 or 4/4/4/12. try getting it stable at 1T and see what your wei bandwidth score is.

the 1st img on the left was the one i was referring to as a 'bit high' for the ddr2. the one on the right (second img) is better. i still think you should try for 1T timing. you may need to decrease the mem speed and increase the timings a little to achieve 1T but sometimes it can be worth it, depending on how much you have to lower the clocks and increase timings. my 1800mhz ram would only get 1T around 1600mhz so to me it wasnt worth the underclock, plus it went from almost 8900mb/s at 2T 1800mhz to around 7800mb/s at 1T 1600mhz. generally lower speed ram needs less 'effort' to achieve 1T unlike my 1800mhz dimm's. my 1600mhz dimm's get 1T straight out the box even tho they rate them for 2T and i can overclock the 1600's at 1T which i found a bit bizzare.

like i posted prev, my new cheap g.skill 1600 9/9/9/24 2T when tweaked at 1T@1680mhz gets around 8300mb/s, my best score on my expensive 1800 8/8/8/24 2T when tweaked was around 8700mb/s-8900mb/s. see where im going? you can optimize your ram to run just as good as higher end types. your not too far off my ddr3 mem scores, that alone would give me reason to tweak some more :p but i will wait for my other board to arrive from rma till i go any further.

experiment, its fun. just set your voltage just under max recommend so they dont overheat too much and play away with those timings. i use alot of different stress testing programs tho the best i have found is intel burn test, it will stress it harder and hotter than all the other 'popular' ones out there and i have tried just about all of them. my vdroop drops more with this software than any of the others which simply means its pushing it harder. it also obtains results in alot (i mean ALOT) quicker than prime95,OCCT,linX and so forth. really simple to use, no flash bling bling appearance.

the other is the basic memtest86+ but it sure takes its time to test for an adequite result that its stable.

What FSB r u using? Also timings? Your FSB will have the greatest increase and from there u can increase ur mem speed a little and then fine tune timings to squeeze a bit more mbps. Sometimes its not worth the unstableness to tweak the timings tho. Its been bout a year since i played with ddr2. But once its set up u should be getting around 5-7gbps.

I already had to tweak the RAM and FSB voltages to get this machine stabilized. I was getting BSOD at the default settings. The RAM is spec'd to run at 2.0 - 2.1 v, and was only getting 1.8 by default, and I raised the FSB by 0.06v (one click in my BIOS), and since then its been 100% stable. If I've gotta tweak 'em some more, so be it... its kind of fun!:D

The SPD tab says I'm running at 400 Mhz. I checked with the g.skill users forum, and the mods there insist that is not a true reading, the RAM is actually running at spec (533Mhz), and CPU_Z doesn't actually measure RAM speed, it just reads the number off of a table in the RAM. I dunno if he's right or not.

pls somebody look to this ( up ) and look to mine ( down ) why there is that deference even my ram is ( 4 giga DDR3 )

there is a simple answer to that, look in that persons specs, and take note of the amd phenom. amd have an internal memory controller in the cpu so there is no relying on a separate motherboard controller, intel has only just started using this technology in the new i7 chips, if you see someone with an i7 cpu they will have around 17+gbps, plus the i7 motherboards have triple channel opposed to dual which is another good boost. the cpu will process everything faster than any other component in a computer, so you can see why having a cpu internal memory controller is a rather large advantage on benchmarks like these. still i am a intel boy.lol

the best i have achieved with ddr3 was around 8900mbps with my super talent project X 1800mhz 8/8/8/24/2T @ 2001mhz 8/7/6/18/2T, they are the same chips as the corsair dominators, but half the price, but i needed 8gb and at the time only had 4gb and could not find the same ram to add another 2 sticks of 2gb so i bought some cheap g.skill 4x2gb sticks 1600 9/9/9/24/2T and so far i have gotten them around 8200mbps @ 1680mhz 9/8/8/16/1T. great performer at a really good price. i was hesitant on g.skill but am very happy with them. one thing i did notice is my system takes longer to show the post screen when powering on with 8gb opposed to 4gb ram. strange.

no worries, i kept wondering this myself when i first started this thread and amd owners were getting almost double compared to higher spec systems with ddr3 and new quad cores. its all about that damn memory controller. :p

Check these out and tell me what you think...

U want to go into ur bios and increase the fsb value from 1066 to maybe 1333. This will give u 333fsb x 9multi = around 3ghz but u will need to run the fsb and mem UNLINKED as ddr2 wont run at 1333mhz. Urs is rated at 1066 so u will have to manually adjust the mem speed. The q6600 should be able to hit 3.6ghz on air as long as its not a stock cooler. It may take a little playing around but it should increase ur winsat mem score a bit. The cpu-z spd tab is simply a table and does not show the actual values.

I'm still running the stock cooler, so I'll hold off on OC'ing for now. A few new coolers are on my wish list at New Egg... I'll be sending in an order in a few weeks. Thanks for looking at this stuff for me, Bloke!
