I've never tried single chanel. But, I have heard it said the single gives better results IF you are doing 1 single thing at a time. If you multi task as in having multiple apps open at the same time, you will get worse performance. I'm not saying that is true, but I have been told that and it sounds reasonable.

ok thanks, have updated my basic specs. I'm running a shuttle SH55J2, with intel i3-530.

I can try taking out the 2x2Gb sticks and running winsat again.

Not a lot of support for your Motherboard, but found this for your model. The key is:

A = 2 modules
B = 4 modules
C = 1 module



You want to try the 2x 4Gig in the proper slots alone 1st. Then try all 4 in the proper slots. If no huge drop off, you'll want to keep the extra ram installed.

The 2 ram gurus are A Guy and Dave76. They will be here soon. But you can run mixed pairs with some difficulty, but it is always best to run matched sets.

I took out the 2x2gb set and re-ran winsat.

Strangely the speed only went up to 7400 MB/s (from 7350 MB/s), so it doesn't seem to be that.

Hard to find info on your motherboard.
Be sure to put the RAM cards in the correct slots, as A Guy mentioned.

The 2x4GB in Dimm slots 1 & 3, run the test.
Then add the 2x2GB in slots 2 & 4, run the test again, compare results.

Even with two sets of Corsair RAM with the same timing specs, may not be compatible or able to run together. Could be due to chip size or how your motherboard and integrated controller is setup.
Some motherboard/integrated controller handle different kinds of RAM better than others.

Look in your motherboard manual under Memory and see what it says about mixing RAM. Due to the above problem most motherboard manuals say not to mix RAM and only use identical size and configuration. Some controllers won't accept RAM cards with small sized chips.

Let us know how the tests go.

Thanks a lot Dave & A-Guy. I ran the test yesterday after taking out the 2gig sticks from the black slots (2&4). I just had the 4gig pair left in the red slots (1&3), which fits in with the motherboard ram guide.

The speed went from 7350 MB/s (all 4 sticks) to 7400 MB/s (2x4gig sticks in red slots 1&3).

So I'm stumped. :huh:

I ran WEI again and no change. Ram test no change either, 7385 MB/s.

I put back in the 2x2gb sticks before running CPUZ.

Have you run the RAM test with the two 2GB cards installed?
If not, then run it. This will tell you if there is a problem with the 4GB cards.
Any mixed RAM cards will run at the specs of the lower card.

The CPUZ SPD tab is strange, for the 4GB cards, with all timings the same going from 666MHZ to 667MHz takes an additional 0.10v!?
This is completely unbelievable, this must be a mistake from Corsair.
SPD info is from the JEDEC standard, generated by the manufacturer - in your case Corsair. It list a few different speeds and timing settings that the RAM should run at, on any system.

What BIOS version do you have?
Latest is .107.

Have you updated all the drivers from the Shuttle website?
They are all dated over a year ago.
Check if there is a newer chipset driver from the Intel website.

With 12GB RAM and 4 RAM cards you will need to bump your memory controller voltage and probably your DRAM voltage.
First, run RAM - Test with Memtest86+ with all four RAM cards installed.
This will take several hours, best to run overnight. If you get any errors you can stop the test.
Let us know the results.

In your BIOS, check if the DRAM frequency is set to 'Auto' and the Configure DRAM Timing by SPD is 'Enabled'.
Page 19 of your mobo manual.
Also check:
CPU VTT Offset - set to auto or? This is your integrated memory controller.
DIMM Voltage Offset - set to auto or?

First the memtest86+, then we can look at the voltages.
