Solved why partition?

by greyed out, i meant:
in step 8 of this guide: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html
just like the picture, but all four icons in the red box is greyed out, 3 of them is greyed out in the picture because the hard drive is brand new, but mine is not, i got all 4 partitions on the list, only the hidden partition and C: has format option, everything else is gray. now the problem is even worst, i can no longer install the os now. im getting this:
"setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition"
when i try to install it on C

im very sorry for being noobish or whatever the word it is for it, i had install windows 7 twice before once from brand new custom build computer, and once is a clean reinstall just like this time, but i never experienced problems like this before

thank you for any reply

Since it is not a new drive, did you remove the previous partition on it first. If you will notice, that the picture in that example is for unallocated space, in which the installation will create a new partition.

The active partition is where the boot files are. Only touch that button if you know why.

I just thought that I should mention that I found that one of the encoders that I had been trying out, scattered the pieces of just one movie across the entire partition, like a shotgun blast. Not sure which one it was, but since the problem was not caused by either of the encoders that I normally use, needless to say, that I will not be using any of those trial encoders again.
