Managed to solve my problem by re-loading windows, not the best way as I would have liked to find out the cause but at least I'm able to use WiFI. :D

These are the actions taken :

1) Tried an install of the Dell recovery image - this was only a Vista image so aborted it.
2) Downloaded ISO of windows 7 Home Premium re-installed this - resolved my problem.

As I knew this cured my fault & I had a backup of everything needed I decided to have a clean install of windows.
3) Installed the new Intel wifi card.
4) Downloaded Win7 + SP1 from Digital Life & made a bootable USB image.
5) Formatted my drive then installed windows.

After multiple updates & several hours of reloading applications the laptop is now working as before..

Roderunner thanks for all your input & the good advice, much appreciated.

I'm currently investigating on how to do a clean install without creating the 100MB System Reserved Partition as it's only required for BitLocker Drive Encryption utility.
