Win 7 64 bit : Randomly unable to access websites

I have been experiencing this problem for a long time, with multiple computers and different installations of windows.

After my computer has been on for a few days, i will suddenly find myself unable to access any web pages. Programs like MIRC, skype and steam function perfectly, as do online games. I just get a generic "cannot connect to server" error when attempting to access websites and i cannot ping any websites such as google.com (it instantly timeouts).

Doing ipconfig /release, /flushdns and /renew fixes it for a few minutes before i lose the ability to access websites again.

Disabling/renewing the network adapter does nothing and windows troubleshooter can find nothing wrong.

The only semi-permanent solution i have found is to restart my computer, but the problem will occur again in a few days.

Using openDNS servers makes no difference. Neither does switching between ethernet cable and wireless. This problem is not browser dependant. Restarting the router only fixes it for a few minutes before i becoe unable to use access websites again.

Does anyone know what is causing the problem and how to fix it permanently?

I would contact your ISP, sounds like that might be where the problem is.

I doubt that, considering that this has happened with multiple ISPs and the problem goes away the moment i restart my computer.

You didn't mention which router you are using but as you described this problem the router seems to be the culprit here.

You might try updating the firmware on the router or using a different one.

Windows has no such problems with DNS, random connection problems like this can be difficult to track down.

I have been experiencing this problem for a long time, with multiple computers and different installations of windows....

...multiple computers
...multiple routers
...multiple ISPs

You might be the only common denominator :-)

For example:
I was having an issue with Microsoft Security Essentials not updating on several computer. I spent many hours letting MS techs remotely control one of those computers and they never could not figure out why. It turns out that MSE had to have a temp folder under the Windows directory. I'm in the habit of redirecting that folder via the environment variables. MSE ignores those variables for part of the update process and silently fails if the temp folder is not found.

For your situation:
I would suggest testing with a different operating system. Run Linux Mint or Ubuntu for a few days. You can run those from a CD/DVD; no need to install it. If you don't want to go that route, then try running with a clean boot on one of your computers for a while. Maybe there is some app that you always install that causes this issue.

Im not sure if this helps, but i noticed that i keep getting event id 1014 in event viewer. For example :

Name resolution for the name isatap.wifi.unsw.edu.au timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

If you're connected to a hotspot or domain network, contact the network administrator. Otherwise: 1. Unplug or turn off the device. 2. After all the lights on the device are off, wait at least 10 seconds. 3. Turn the device on or plug it back into the power outlet. To restart a router or modem that has a built-in battery, press and quickly release the Reset button.

In your first post, you mention more than one computer: "I have been experiencing this problem for a long time, with multiple computers and different installations of windows." Are you still getting disconnects on more than one computer?

I dont actually have more than one computer now but it used to happen on my desktop, an older laptop and its happening on this laptop too.

Multiple ISPs and it even happens in different countries.

The only common factor seems to be that all computers were running win 7.

The only common factor seems to be that all computers were running win 7.
Again, I have to think that the common factor might be you. Something that you install on every computer or something that you do to every computer might be the cause. W7 does not do this on its own.

Just to repeat, you cannot surf or ping when this issue happens, but other apps are still connected to the internet and functioning fine - correct? Make a batch file on your desktop that pings google.com. Then make another batch file that pings an IP address for google.com. When the issue happens, run both batch files and let's see if you are loosing the ability to resolve URLs. You should be able to ping an IP address even if the DNS process has failed.

Also, the next time that you get this disconnect, disable and then stop the service named DNS Client. Do not reboot. Just exit Firefox and/or IE & check task manager to make sure that they left RAM. Then start IE and see if you can surf somewhere.

Without the DNS Client service running, each application has to make its own request for DNS info.

Pretty much grasping at straws here.

Yes thats correct, i cannot surf web pages but i still remain connected on apps like IRC, steam or online games.

IIRC i can ping IP addresses but not based on URLs...but i dont know what to make of that other than theres a DNS problem somewhere.

Restart the DNS client service? Or just stop it entirely?

You will need to stop and disable the DNS Client for this experiment. If you don't disable it, some app will just start it again.

Hmm..the problem just happened again, and i tried stopping the service. That did nothing, so i restarted it. Did not help either...was i supposed to change startup type to disabled?
