Win 7 boot problem

I will try tonight but I don't understand how first suggestion could work, how can I browse files if I don't have access to the disk ?
Booting with the Win 7 DVD in repair mode
E: previous Win 7 C: drive (the old C: corrupted)
To clear things up gregrockers first suggestion was to see if you could copy your personal data from E:, F:, and G: using the method here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html to your new backup drive after you loaded your driver, although I see your backup drive is not listed but I assume it wasn't connected or not partitioned and formatted.

If that is what you tried and you could see E: but could not open it, then that would mean
Correct, the drive E: is visible but I cannot open it.
Additional information: when I load the HDD driver, I got an error message:"The file or directory E:\boot\bcd is damaged or unreadable. Run CHKDSK. Idem for \sources,
I didn't connected the backup drive as I have no access to this E: drive.
I tried to make a bootable USB key with Rescue Kit 11 but it didn't work so I will burn a CD tonight to try Rescue Kit 11.

Anyway hopefully Rescue Disk will work for you and once your personal data is safe then we can look at the MFT or bite the bullet and reformat.

bala - Please start a new thread where you can get personalized attention.

Droopy - Have you plugged in your backup drive to another computer to see if it is ready to go? It may need initializing or formatting. You should not have to install drivers for a modern SATA HD to be seen by Win7 or any of the tools we use here.

Let us know how Paragon Rescue works to copy and paste. If it fails to external, try pasting some files to your stick as a test.

gregrocker - The drivers droopy is loading are for his internal HD. As we have already found out that they are required as his HD is not found by WinPE unless he loads them.

droopy - If the backup drive is a USB Hard Drive it's probably ready to go straight out of the box, but if you find that you can't access it then as gregrocker suggested plug it into another computer to see what needs to be done to get it to work, eg. partition and format.

Paragon Rescue Kit didn't help :-(
I can see the WinRE partition and the old D: partition in File Transfer Wizard but not the old C: partition.

See if the manufacturer's Extended HD Diagnostics/Repair CD scan can salvage the HD.

If you have a WD HD, download and burn ISO file to CD using ImgBurn at 4x speed: WD Support / Downloads / Legacy Internal / WD Raptor

Otherwise find your ISO download here: HD Diagnostic
or here: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp

Boot to run Extended scan, report back results.

You may need to run it more than once if it finds multiple problems.

Follow this with Disk Check from Win7 DVD or Repair CD Recovery Command Line.

If neither of these will repair the HD or file system after repeat attempts then it is dead.

When I boot with the WD ISO image, the screen remain empty and it doesn't start.
I also tried Active Partition Recovery.
With this tool, I can see the disk and the directories hierarchy but when I click in any directory, it is empty.
Though, I make an image copy with this tool on my external HDD.
At the start of this image copy, it reported a bad sector.
I am sure that almost all files are recoverable otherwise I wouldn't spend so much of your time.
There are some photos that was not saved and I wouldn't like to lose it.

If you cannot repair the HD enough to make it functional, then the next step is data recovery mode.

Try scanning with Recuva to see what it finds.

You may need to try all data recovering programs you can find, if they don't have a boot disk and you can't boot from any drive/partition you may have to move the drive to a working PC. Would not recommend using your drive to boot.

Was the ISO you downloaded Diag504fCD.iso?
It may not make any difference but what speed did your burn at? Try 2x or 4x.

If you can make a bootable DOS USB drive you could try Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS - DLGDiagv519.zip
here WD Support / Downloads / WD Scorpio & AV-25 / WD Scorpio Blue

I tried Recuva v 1.42.
It failed with following error message: "invalid MFT".
I tried Recuva v 1.37 that was on my old UBCD4Win CD.
It found a lot of files but was stuck on 71%.
I will try other data recovering programs.
Do you have any recommendation ?
About WD diagnostic, I used Diag504fCD.iso, at speed 4x that was the lowest speed available.

Don't know why WD Diagnostic failed to, I have had issues with some boot disk not wanting to boot. As I said you could try a bootable dos usb with DLGDiagv519.zip

I do know TestDisk - CGSecurity has an option to copy files if it can list them.

Run Testdisk in 32bit WinPE or on a different PC and after selecting the drive choose your partition table type (Intel) then choose Advanced -> List -> Choose your corrupted partition then use the colon(:, shift+:/;) key to select your files and press C (shift+c) to copy, select your destination and press c again.
Keys to use are listed at the bottom then at the top when you select your destination.

You could also try the MFT repair as you can't do too much more damage and then see how Recuva 1.42 goes.

As for other recommendations of recovering programs I don't know, I've used a couple a long time ago but can't remember what they were. I don't believe there's many free ones out there but have a search of the forum for data recovery, most likly you'll keep getting the sames ones recommended.

If the data is really really important then running a trail/demo might be worth it and paying for the full version if you have success with one of them.

If it's really really really absolutly important and you have plenty of money then you could try one of the professional data recovery services where you take/send your hard drive to them.

Gregrocker may have some better suggestions so have a look around and check back later.

Have you worked through these steps for when Windows 7 fails to boot?

Exhausting all of these steps short of running Factory Recovery or Reinstalling, there are some additional line commands you can run manually which are automated in Startup Repair - the reason it must be run three separate times.
How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows
MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record - Windows 7 Forums
Repair - Computer won't boot

Some news from my problem.
I tried GetDataBack as suggested by I failed running it in WinPE.
I got an error message like "no permission or no temp directory".
Then I tried Easus Data Recovery Wizard.
It scan the HDD (for more than 2 hours) and find a lot of partitions/directories and files to recover.
I then chose the partition to recover.
It runs for an hour more then the progress bar was stuck at about 60%.

It appears your HD isn't in good enough condition for data recovery.

However since there was no reply to the tests suggested we don't know for sure if every effort was made to repair it using maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan and Disk Check. Sometimes repairs can give it enough functionality to recover data.

Quote from gregrockers link above
Western Digital - I've had issues with running this from a CD/DVD - try the Hitachi DFT (on older/IDE systems) or the Seagate SeaTools (on newer/SATA systems)
I would first try making a USB flash stick bootable with DOS and using this Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS. This one is just a exe file for DOS. I don't know if this will work as DOS might not recognize your hard drive, it will depend on your SATA controller and in the BIOS it will probably need to be set as IDE not ACHI or RAID.

You can use this tool, USB Format Tool, to format your USB and install the DOS files which I obtained from Windows 98 Boot Disk and extracted and zipped them for you. They are attached to this post. After that finishes, it took my 8GB USB about 25mins, extract the exe from Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS to the USB drive.

To run it just boot the USB and you should get a command line where you can type the exe's filename and press enter. If you don't know DOS you can type dir and press enter to list the files if you forget the filename.

@gregrocker
Droppy did mention he tried to run the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic CD but it hung with a blank screen during boot.
