Win 7 Slow Startup - 4 mins

My new Dell Studio 1558 is very slow to boot. When I first got it about a month ago it was fine, now it takes 3 - 4 mins to boot. After I get the log on password screen I see the blue welcome screen then it goes black for 1 - 2 mins. I see a mouse pointer and the mouse is active and can be moved with th touch pad. By comparason my desktop sits on this screen for about 3 seconds.


I have tried:
Disabling all the startup items on the startup tab in msconfig.exe - this improved the startup but ony by 20 - 30 seconds or so.

Looking in device manager - there are no yellow exclamation marks

Instead of disabling the items in the Startup tab of MSConfig, try disabling half of the items in the Services tab of msconfig.

  • Disable 1/2 the services
  • Reboot
  • If your boot time is better, you know it's one of those services.
  • If not, re-enable stopped services and disable the other half.

If your boot time is improved by one half or the other, then you can turn them back on in batches of five services at a time until you find a batch that slows you down. When you find that batch, turn those 5 back off and then turn one on at a time until you find the culprit. You can continue turning the services back on in batches of five after you find a culprit if you think multiple services are causing the long boot time.

EDIT: After you've found whatever service(s) caused your problem, you can also go through your startup items using the same method. When you disabled them you received a -30 boost, so one or two *could* be hampering your startup. If you don't find a specific startup item that's hurting, it could just be the effect of so many startup items.

You should be able to do so, I would do a bit more research on it first because I've never done it, but I've seen it recommended many times.

A month old computer doing this is really odd. If there is any possibility of this being a hardware issue then would it be sensible perhaps to return to Dell. esp given that you have not installed any additional software since the factory install as shipped to you - which I read to be the case?

Windows XP - Now Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).
Just a couple of thoughts, do you have Antivirus running some sort of boot scan?
In the bios boot order is the harddrive first in the list? Often you find it has CD/DVD drive and USB first this can slow boot times.
Do you have a plan coloured desktop image? Sounds odd but changing desktop from solid colour to a picture knocks 30 seconds off the boot time.

Install CCleaner ,run it and hit the tools(spanner/wrench) box,then start up box and see what starts on boot up ,disable what you dont need,i only have start up which is my GPU Monitorand MSSE(Apart from requred programs)
What antivirus do you Use??

Thanks, installed CC cleaner - the screen you suggest is the same as the startup tab on msconfig.

I have ran it - disabled some stuff but no real change.

I am using Mcafee that came with the laptop. There is no boot scan that I can find.

The HDD is listed first in the BIOS and I have a photograph as my desktop.

I can't fathom half of what those services do -- but sometimes a long boot time can be caused by things like adobe automatic updates trying to connect with the Internet directly at boot time -- and if it can't find a connection it might make several retries slowing your whole process down.

Other things might be creating a HUGE paging file at boot up or some software running various "algorithms" trying to find out what you usually run and "pre fetch / pre load" these apps so when you do launch them they start faster.

My usual solution -- although I'm a non techie in this area -- would be to backup your system and then go for a new install. If you miss anything or it goes wrong you still have the initial backup.

incidentally I'd also backup the system before messing around with stopping services -- since you could be left with an inoperative service if you disable some essential kernel services.

Not a very helpful answer I know but sometimes it's better just to FIX a problem than spending ages and ages trying to find out why you got the problem in the first place --I think in the USA it's called something like "Monday Morning Quarterbacking".
