Cyanide's post answers a question I was asking in another thread. I am eligible for the student offer but I will need to do a clean install as I want to go from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit Windows 7 but the "upgrade" label was worrying me.

I have another question which indirectly relates to the student offer. Both Home Premium and Professional are available at the same price on the student offer so should I just reflexively go for the Professional? I have read that Home Premium does not include the Windows XP virtual environment but I am not sure whether that is accurate or not. I mean, that XP environment is an attractive feature and if Professional is the same price surely that is the better option on that basis.

Any thoughts?

I think I am going to grab Windows 7 Professional. It is £30 for eligible UK students, giving immediate access to the download, plus £9 for the disks. Think I will get the whole package and just wait for the disk to arrive and do the installation from that.

I am still in a state of some confusion over the difference between the "upgrade" box and the "full version". If I can do a clean installation of 64-bit Windows 7 from the "upgrade" disk then how is it different from the "full version".

I am puzzled.

It is different for normal purchasers. The student price to UPGRADE, i.e move to something better - gets the full key - at least from the US.

Ah, so if I buy the student "upgrade" I am, in effect, getting the full package? That's good.

Cool. I have e-mailed Microsoft support to try to clarify the issue in the UK so if I get a definitive answer I will post it here.

I installed it as a new installation on a different partition running the file that I downloaded. I installed it from the RC release without burning the file to a DVD.

It activated perfectly fine. I'm not sure how it will install from DOS.

How easy was this? I am running RC1 as my sole O/S at the moment and my student download link just arrived. Can I really just run the .exe and do a direct upgrade as opposed to turning it into an iso, burning, doing a clean install etc?

On a practical level, I suppose it depends on how ready you are for them to contact you and ask for proof of enrollment in .5 credit of classes. There are likely other discounts you can obtain as faculty/staff on campus, too, though they just might not be out right away. And if you do happen to take .5 credit of some form of class, you meet the requirements without question.

Heres a question maybe one of you guys could answer.

I bought the x64 student edition, but wanted to install it on my netbook as well, so would need the x86. Do you think if I called them, they would give me a x86 as well, because I still bought it and its still the same software? Its normal to get both 32 and 64 when you buy an OS from microsoft... usually :P

Pro has 3 features that Home Premium doesnt:
  1. Domain Join (helpful if you ever need to join a large network)
  2. Backup and Restore
  3. XP Mode

I know many faculty and staff who regularly purchase "student deals"!

But check first with your CIS dept. and see if your school is a member of the MS Academic Alliance.... if you are Win 7 Pro is a free download!

No. You're looking for a separate second copy. Even when you get both discs, you have to choose one to install, and you use the one key you get on whatever you install.

They're not going to cover a second installation with that deal.
