Win8: Side-By-side configuration incorrect / cant run exe files

Hello all,

Im sorry in advance if this is the wrong forum to post, but i think this problem has nothing to do with my windows version.
Im running windows 8 pro 64bit (updated from win7 pro), leggal install. Laptop is hp elitebook 8560w.

All started with a sudden restart (this happens usually due to some overheating problems of my laptop. Anyway, im used to it. When pc restarted i tried to run chrome. It poped up an error msg like the one in img. Thought its something with chrome. After that i tried opera, same thing happened. Problem is this happens for ALL .exe files, i cannot even start from control panel "Uninstall a program" or regedit. Only some apps run like paint, task manager, disk management and some of win8 useless apps like maps. I cannot enter safe mode either. (its shift+f8, right?)

Really dunno what to do, my hands are tight.
Just a note, i have loads of programs install, (mainly proffesional ones), like microsoft c++ 2008 and ms sql server.

Any help would be usefull.

Almost found a solution. Followed the guide here.
I repaired several times and did windows update. At the start i had several errors but now i'm stuck with those here:

tried reinstall Visual C++ 2008 + Visual C++ 2010 but it didn't work.

Sounds like your problem is with the dreaded WINSXS (Windows Side by Side) folder. WINSXS is, in my opinion, probably the largest single design flaw in Windows. What it does is contain copies of DLL files and other things supposedly to eliminate the old "DLL Hell" problem from previous versions of Windows. Basically the idea is to make a copy of any DLL or other system-type files a program installs so that there will always be a way to remove the installed program and not break other software that might use the same DLL file.

The problem with this is that WINSXS gets increasingly large over time, and there is no way to clean it up. I've not heard of a problem like yours before - where a program can;t run because it somehow got out of synch with what's in WINSXS. SO this is yet another fundamental problem with the WINSXS concept.

What I'd suggest is you de-install and re-install all the software that is mentioned in your SFC output as not being verified OK. My guess is that doing that will update/replace the problematic contents of WINSXS. But this is just a guess. Note that there is no way you can deal with WINSXS yourself - don't even try this.

I understand what u are meaning. Generally I avoid anymore to format my pc. Truth is that I have dozens of programs installed but it's not like that they are rubbish. I consider myshelf experienced user and i try to be careful. Programs that i have installed are mainly professional like adobe suite (photoshop, dreamweaver, flash etc), ms sql server 2008, visual studio, ms business intelligence, xmp spy etc (oh and wow ). But it's not like i install any stupid freeware programs..

Anyway to our point. Problem is that from sfcdetails file I don't know what to exactly do. At the beginning it had much more errors but sfc corrected them. The only ones that u meet now (and are repeated) are:

From what i found with searching problem is (prolly) something with visual C++ 2008 and 2010 distribution packs. I tried to uninstall (all of) them, even 2005, both x86 and x64 and reinstall. Did restarts, sfcscan and used ccleaner before i install them again. But it didn't help. I don't want to start and re-install every ms related program. If i do that, i prefer to format it. Looking for some more targeted solution.

Well, the good news is you have significantly reduced the number of reported errors. The bad news is the 2 you have left will likely be difficult to fix.

The remaining errors clearly have to do with Visual C 8 & 9. Usually deleting/reinstalling will fix things, but that didn't work for you. So you must have a deeper problem. Here's what I'd do (in this order):

1. Get a program de-install routine (I use Advanced Uninstaller Free) and use this to delete VC 8 & 9. The uninstaller will first run the normal Uninstall that comes with the software, but after that it will do a registry search and give you the option to delete all the associated registry entries that got left behind after the uninstaller finished. Then it will look for any leftover files and give you the option to delete these. I'd suggest deleting everything.

Then reinstall VC 8 & 9 again (and hope for the best.)

2. Google "cannot verify component files for Microsoft.VC80.CRT". You'd be surprised at how much info is out there for virtually any error message you come upon.

3. Go to Windows - Microsoft Community and post a question describing your problem. If you get lucky someone will give you an answer that might work.

I tried what u said me at "1" but it didn't work. I already have done tons of searching at google but i either was finding problems not like mine and when i was finding something similar there was no solution...

Anyway, because i needed my pc i did a reset and it seems to work fine now.

I had this problem before, but I got frustrated and did a clean install. I wish I knew about this forum before I had that problem

Follow the instruction in Fix Windows corruption errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool! That is, try to run `DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth` in the terminal. This solves this problem for me.
