What's your boot config look like now?

I haven't been "cheating" yet - so I 'll have to look at the tut. Can you post a link? Don't want to look at the wrong one - Mr. Brink is very prolific :)

Off hand, I'd guess that the rec is for dual booting, not a general rec for Win8.

I set Win 7 x64 as the default Boot OS.
With that setting the PC always uses the Win 7 boot selection screen.
I like that much better than the Win 8 boot selection screen.
I used EasyBCD for this, but you should be able to set the default with msconfig or BCD commands.

I do the same thing as you Dave. I think what actually happens if you set it to 8 as default Windows 8 almost completely loads then asks you to choose. If you choose 8 the sign on screen appears right away. If you choose 7 the machine restarts and loads Windows 7 which take a while. It just cheats to make 8 look faster than 7.

I think you're right.
I see the same thing as you do in how it boots.
I was pleasantly surprised when I got the Win 7 boot screen after changing the default OS from Win 8 to Win 7.

Interesting read here. I have switched to 8 as my only OS. I found I don't need a start menu, just made my start screen good for me.

Near the bottom #11 I believe,
Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista
I'm not sure if this is effecting booting to win-7 or not ?
Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

But yes indeed win-7 default all the way changed to 5 seconds ;)

Thanks Mike,

I'm wondering if some of the comments about booting to Win8 and slower shutdown might be related to the hybrid solution. A quick scan of the links (very quick, so I might be way off base) indicates that hibernation is used to speed up Win8 boot.

If I read that correctly then, Win8 shutdown writes the hiberfile (has to be down at shut down to speed up startup). So here's my guess - turn off hibernation.

I don't use that feature (hibernation) and Win8 boots fairly fast.

Any takers on testing turning off hibernation with dual boot to see how that affects shutdown and startup?

I have hibernation off on 7 never even looked at it on 8 I'll test start8's search :p

Well fast start was enabled again :confused:
Might of been re-activated after 8.1's update ?
It's off now again and so is hibernation when plugged in,
See how it goes,
Coming out of win-8 just now with restart did not use win-8 boot manager :D
It used win-7 boot manager and was pretty quick going back to win-7,
So either hibernation disable or fast boot disable or the combination of the two help that issue,
I just believe win-8 finally started to use win-7 boot manager as win-7 is the default os ;)

Hey Mike,

I used the powercfg command to check the status on my machine. Search found nothing (Everywhere or Settings), so I opened help which is probably a better initial choice than search at this stage for me anyway.

I thought you could just issue powercfg and it would tell you what the current settings are, but it wanted a parameter, so I gave it /h - not good enough, so I gave it /hibernate - still not good enough. I guess it wants the full parameter list.

powercfg /query gives you everything and more. I haven't taken the time to determine if this dumps only the current plan or all plans.

Coming out of win-8 just now with restart did not use win-8 boot manager :D
It used win-7 boot manager and was pretty quick going back to win-7,
So either hibernation disable or fast boot disable or the combination of the two help that issue,
I just believe win-8 finally started to use win-7 boot manager as win-7 is the default os ;)

No surprise there - it's the same search!

Search is tough to get a handle on. I cursed it at first... nothing was ever found, even the stuff I could see in the folder I was searching. There is an option to make it less query-like, but I got used to the way I had to specify the query.

I don't know of a way to explain search to make it easier for people to use. I can give a few pointers, some web pages (see my sig links) - but basically I had to play around with it until it sunk in. It is really powerful once you get it.

It just sucks, big time, until you get it :p

Ya, Windows 8 never actually fully shuts down. This is why it boots so fast. It basically hibernates every time instead of doing a full proper reboot. From what I read, the only way to make it to a actual full restart or shutdown is from powershell. or cmd

Hmmm, so even with Hibernation off, you're saying that Win8 cheats and still writes the hiberfile or uses some other mechanism that essentially is hibernation?

I have hibernation off, let me see if there is a hiberfile.sys

Searched for type:sys and found swapfile (about 260 MB) (don't hide protected OS files)
I thought that came from me playing around with Linux Mint Mate though. It has today's date but I haven't booted Mint Mate today, so it must belong to Windows.
