Last week I was given a Windows 7 Professional laptop that was sitting in storage for 4+ months

After some looking around and cleaning it up I've discovered that the laptop does not update, it gets stuck on "checking for updates"

I have left it for a couple of hours and restarted multiple times and left it for 7 hours last night while I slept but it was still checking for updates in the morning so I shut it down because I had to leave the house

I have searched on google for any fixes to this problem and there seems to have been many others with this problem in 2015/16 but with many different resolutions and fixing the problem doesn't seem to be straight forward and simple

From what I know this is a refurbished laptop and had XP on it before, it runs really fast for its age and was apparently working fine until it was stored away

How do I approach this problem without trying 10000's of different fixes, command line entries, fix it tools, manual KB downloads and random file deletion?

I hope you can help! Thanks

Just after I made this post the laptop started updating by itself, and downloaded/installed the updates, and after a few successful updates were installed I restarted a couple of times and it kept updating, it seems to be working fine and whatever I did before seems to have fixed the problem

I can't remember exactly what I did but it was a combination of the 7 billion different fixes that I found by googling the problem, just make sure you know what you're doing and if in doubt = ask the forums

Thanks for your suggestion though!
