Solved W7 not updating!

Hi there. @ Ranger, am having a similar issue as earlier which you resolved.

Tried it again, but won't work......BITS, Windows Time and Update all 3 services are running.....any suggestions.

Exit Windows Update, and then go to your C:\Windows folder. You will find a folder there called SoftwareDistribution.

Rename the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to something else, say, C:\Windows\SoftwareDistributionOld. Doing this in effect clears out your update history, because you have named it to something else, meaning Windows won't be able to find it.

This trick worked for me when my Windows Update process was stuck.

Alexey2912. I don't think your current problem is the same as it was last year. You don't seem to be receiving the "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running, You may need to restart your computer".

Someone will come in soon & advise you on resetting Windows Update.

Hi alexey,

according to that screenshot your last updates were installed a couple days ago, 20th, !!!

and that screen only shows when your update settings is NOT set to auto update.

Ranger, thanks for the reply, which services should be running.... I have BITS, Windows Update and Windows Time all 3 started and Auto delayed...is that fine?

The only ones I would be concerned about are the ones which are named "Update for Windows 7". The only Windows 7 updates I ever install are ones which are security-related -- either they have the word "security" as part of their name, or they have some obvious security purpose, such as "Malicious Software Removal Tool". I personally would never install a Windows 7 update which simply called itself "Update for Windows 7". Windows 7 is a mature product, so you don't need to install any "bug fixes" or "enhancements".

If all is ok, I wouldn't worry about the fact that the "Update for Windows 7" items are installed. But what I would suggest is that whenever you are going to install Windows updates, you should first create a restore point. Doing so will allow you to uninstall the updates if something went wrong as a result of their being installed.
