Hello.

For almost the last year now, I have been unable to run windows updates on my computer. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit SP1. Running the update yields the error code 0x8007370b. I have searched the Internet, ran the Microsoft Fix It tool, and gone thru the Windows Trouble Shooter, but none have made a difference. I am almost to that point where I will do a clean install, but since everything else on the computer is running fine, I only will do this as a last resort. Any and all help is welcome. Thank you!

You have a rather nasty error set in the CBS log....

The errors in the CheckSUR log are of the same type (bit-flips)

Code:
(f) CSI Corrupt Identity 0xC0150017 Microsoft-Windows-RasRTUtils, Culture=neutral, Version=6.1.7601.17514, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35, [B]ProcessorA3chitecture[/B]=amd64, versionScope=NonSxS amd64_microsoft-windows-rasrtu,ils_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_6b3b9980011a19de Bad identity

These both relate, I suspect to the same fault.

I think I'd better call in the cavalry on this one - I'm not competent on this type of error in this area

Please wait for Tom to respond.

Thank you for your time.

Thanks for looking at it. I hope there is some hope for this problem. I'll wait for a reply from Tom, otherwise would you recommend a clean install? If so, do you know of a way I can reactivate it WITHOUT having to go thru Microsoft again? Thanks.

Proper Activation requires connection to the MS servers - it's that simple. Why do you have a problem with that?

Activation Question

It's not a problem, I just wanted to know if I could somehow save the activation info before doing a clean install and then replacing it once I'm done with the install of Windows, so that I don't have to either activate again over the Internet or call up MS. No hardware is going to change, so I thought it might save me having to deal with Microsoft. Thanks.

It's very unlikely that you'll need a clean install - although a repair install is a possibility.

Hello bpierce and welcome to the forums

As Noel pointed out, you had a few bitflips in your registry which we will need to correct. In order to do so, I will need you to upload your registry hive for me please. Navigate to this folder:

C:\Windows\system32\config

And copy the file named COMPONENTS (it has no file extension) to your Desktop. Then zip it up and upload it to your Dropbox, Skydrive or any other file sharing website. I would recommend SendSpace if you don't know any:

Free large file hosting. Send big files the easy way!

Thanks for the file, that's exactly what I needed. I have fixed your registry, now we just need to perform the replacement. Could you download this file please:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16537616/COMPONENTS (bpierce).zip

Save it to your Desktop. Then right click > Extract All... and extract the contents to your Desktop. There should be one file, COMPONENTS (with no extension).

Then navigate to this folder:

C:\Windows\system32\config\

In that folder, rename the file COMPONENTS to COMPONENTS.bak

Then copy the COMPONENTS file from your Desktop to this folder.

Then reboot your computer please.

After your computer has rebooted, I would like you to run the System Update Readiness Tool again, then upload the CheckSUR.persist.log file as before please.

Tom

Attached you will find the file you requested. I reran the SURT Tool as requested and also did a SFC Scan, which found errors this time and fixed them all. I then tried an update check and IT WORKED! I'm SO HAPPY. I finally have an up to date computer. Words cannot express my gratitude! THANK YOU!

If you need more info, please let me know. Again, THANKS!

Thank You

Thanks again for your time. I have been installing updates all day and it was going fine until it wanted to update my NVidia display drivers to 3.10.90. This seemed to lock up the computer, so tried to revert back to 3.06.97, but System restore would not complete successfully. I eventually gave up on using any of the install programs from NVidia and just opted for the driver provided from Microsoft. I'm not a gamer, so this really isn't a big concern for me. You wouldn't happen to have any suggestions, would you? No big deal, as I said, I'm just thrilled to have updates working again.

Graphics drivers are a bit of a law unto themselves.
Your best bet is probably to see if there's a driver cleanup tool available on the NVidia site, and run that before attempting to install the new set of drivers.

Hi all,

I've just read through this thread and it appears that I have the exact same problem. Identical apart from mines on Windows 7 Pro instead of Ultimate. I was wondering if I followed the same steps as instructed by Tom/Noel will you be able to assist me please? I'm desperate to get this baby working.
