Hi,

I have a depll vostro 1700. A few weeks ago I upgraded from vista to windows 7.
Then suddenly over the weekend (I left my laptop on) I have experienced the black screen with cursor problem. I was not able to start windows in any mode. Even with the CD install, nothing was happening. Finally I disabled the Sata and choose AHC instead of ahci option in the bios and it worked. The PC boots perfectly in safe mode but in the normal mode it is not working well. It take ages for windows to start and finally it seems to be stuck in the process. I guess I have a good shot of resolving the problem from safe mode. What should I do?

Thanks
Denis

Hi,

If you can boot to safe mode, next step would be to check system files:
sfc/scannow (on command prompt with admin rights)
this will check and do repairs if necessary.

If errors are reported - depends on severity reinstallation can be considered.
It would be nice to post back the outcome of sfc.

Thank you for your reply! I already try to run the integrity scan via CMD. Everything is perfect from this point of view, no violation. Any other suggestion?

Device manager?

try running a system integrity scan via cmd... "sfc /scannow"
also have a look out for any dmp. Files to assist us... http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

did you find any violations.?

& welcome to the forums.;)

is all your correct drivers loaded, no funnies in "dev mnger."(right-click c: > manage > dev mnger.)

have you tried a chkdsk?(fix bad sectors & errors.)

try going as barebone as possible for now.

USE REVO to uninstall any unnecessary 3rd party apps.(Revo in advanced mode.)

have a look at you dev mgr

Try system restore?

Next I would try a system restore.
Check the event log for error messages and try to figure out what happened when. Choose a restore point prior of error messages. Restore. See if you can boot normally.

When I do a right click on c:, I do not see the option Manage
For system restore, I do not have a system restore available or maybe I do not look in the right place
In the event viewer, I see many things:
Application
Error source vss (volume shadow copy service error)
Error source vss (volume shadow copy service information) The COM server with CLSID and name software provider cannot be started

I got many warning with the winlogon source
The winlogon notification subscriber <GPCLIENT> was unavailable to handle a notification system

I can see some errors in the windows logs/system
A lot of event 7001 from service control manager

By this information, is there anything that looks not good?

Interesting finding! I did a msconfig. I changed to diagnostic startup. Everything is now fine. The boot works great. The only thing that does not work is windows live mail. Is it normal?
Does it mean the problem comes from one of the program that is launched at start up?
