I am wanting a codec pack for windows 7.

I have seen the shark one but when I go to install it wants to install a convertor. All I want is codecs to playback.

Is there anything else yet?

Sharks codecs are the only ones I use on Win7 mainly because he states that he doesnt change or overwrite any of the existing codecs that come with Windows.

I recommend K-Lite or CCCP (cccp is the best so far but K-lite is near).

CCCP for me. Works perfect. The MPC that's included is somewhat out of date though so I recommend getting MPC Home Cinema, if you prefer a minimalistic sort of video player. :)

Nop, stick with the MPC given by CCCP even if it's old. It's the better and the most stable version of MPC. Everything works without making a change. :D

Or if you preffer mode codecs (a lot) use K-Lite but it will consume more resources BUT it's up to date with the latest updates of codecs...anyway CCCP is the most recommended because they are not codecs, are only filtres configured for the best performance&less resources. :D

I'm running v. 1.38 on Windows 7 build 7077 and it won't let me remove it. In control panel all I get is "repair." It won't let me install the newer version. So I installed it again selecting Repair. Still only option in Control Panel is Repair... no uninstall.

edit: Ok, brain cramp. I can uninstall by running the installer. Still, it was an unpleasant surprise when I installed the latest version only to be told I now have IE 8 on my system!! Restore pointed that off right away!!

Shark at least put a checkbox. Geez!!

Why not skip the Codec Packs and just use VLC which plays just about every format without codec packs.

Using the 'builtin' uninstallers is NOT sufficient to deal with the plethora of possibilities my settings applications allow. To properly reset your system to a pre-installation environment it was nessasary for me to disable the 'usual' uninstall methods and force users to uninstall using the imposed methods.

When my products are removed from your system, I assure you, your system is as it was, before we met.

On the Help TAB of the Settings Application is an UNINSTALL BUTTON.
Since the x64 releases is an ADDON to the 32bit release it must be uninstalled BEFORE the 32bit package.

Big Dan: VLC plays movies horribly in W7, with users noticing pixilation, and wrong colors being displayed as such. I personally use Shark's Codec's, and they work great.

There's a misunderstanding. I guess I was one cup short of a coffee. I figured out how to uninstall. The bit about the checkbox was referring to IE8 popping up on my system without even a how do you do. I sure wouldn't authorize it being put on. I have IE disallowed in local security policy. I don't need another IE helper deleting a partition again, so I never ever run IE.

Choose a Custom installation and disable setup information.

If you were to actually read the webpage the installer sends you to, you would have known to use the settings apllications UNINSTALL button on the Help TAB along with other important setup information such as using the Associate button on the Help TAB if you want to use the windows players.

Running the installer to get an uninstall option is not the recommended uninstall procedure and will not set your system back to a pre-installation environmemt.
I disabled the Windows 'Programs and Features' uninstall interface on purpose.

The information on that page will be expanded as time permits.

I tried the uninstall from the utilities program after running the program as administator. It didn't work. Don't assume people don't read. It's just a debating trick that's rather poor manners.

To have a default install that puts on unsolicited software is crass. If you want to insist people get your download only from the source, don't put it on a board with software updates like AfterDawn. The default install should tell people if anything other than the base program and libraries needed to run it are going to be put on.

I didnt assume anything. I have never experienced uninstall failure using the proper methods using the settings application and I have purposely disable uninstall through conventional methods because these uninstalls were not sufficiently reverting peoples systems to a pre-installation environment.

I only authorize MajorGeeks to distribute the software.
All those other sites such as Afterdawn are taking it upon themselves to re-distribute it.

Nothing unsolicited was installed.

Nothing other than the base program is installed. If you are assuming I installed Internet Explorer to your system you are gravely mistaken. I simply used the software that EXISTS on your machine to call up that webpage.

I understand your feelings towards IE so I have modified the installer to use whatever it is you have installed as a default webbrowser to display the setup information page in the future.
It will no longer call IE by default.

Sorry then. It kind of took me by surprise to see IE 8 pop up. Come to think of it, MS just installed some "AddOn" to Firefox without asking either. That's twice they got me in less than a week. I don't even have Auto Updates or Windows Updates enabled. But I guess if you had somebody write the OS you can bypass all the permissions(so much for all that UAC crap.)

Sorry Shark. I usually don't make assumptions either. Two things happening together can sometimes make it look like the first caused the second. If it's any help afa the uninstall, after getting the message about it must be run as administrator, I closed the utility program, ran it as administrator, and got the same message. I'm using build 7077 so maybe that's a factor.

I know what you mean about the sites. If I try to put my software on some places, they want $250. If I don't want them to put it on, I browse by there one day and all my stuff is up there with half-assed info about what it is. :)

edit: this is really weird. If I try to run IE I get the "blocked by local security policy" or whatever it is, that I set, and it won't come up. But for some reason it popped up after codec install. In default programs it has 3 checks, like .mht files, and it won't let you uncheck them. But if the exe is blocked it's pretty mysterious how it's loading. Must be yet another "undocumented Windows" feature. :(

edit2: I suspect what happened is Local Security Policy isn't heavy enough because it's likely the current user. I bet because the IE launch was part of the install it therefore had higher privilege(trusted installer or whatever they call it.) I have to make sure to plug that security hole. :)

edit3: It appears disabling IE using the Local Security Policy approach is just about useless since any malware you try to install will have Install privileges that trump those of a local user account. Best to follow the procedure on MS site for removing IE 8
