Kaspersky and AVG version 8 will both run on Windows 7 Beta.

http://aboutnewtech.com/windows-7-a...tware-microsoft-internet/virus-trojan-spyware

AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Welcome Windows 7 user!
The popular security software developer Kaspersky has released a first technical preview version of the upcoming Kaspersky Anti-virus solution for Windows 7. The release can be downloaded directly from the Kaspersky ftp site.
Its current version is 8.0.0.1015. Below is the full Kaspersky press release:
Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management systems, announces the release of a technical prototype of Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows 7.
Windows 7 is the next release of the Microsoft Windows operating system which will replace Windows Vista and is a step forward in the development of Microsoft operating systems. The new OS will incorporate enhanced reliability, greater efficiency, an improved interface and extended working features both in global and local information networks.
The technical preview is a complex solution for securing computers running under Windows 7. The prototype includes not only an antivirus component but an effective and fully functional firewall and anti-spam filter.
At the heart of the new technical prototype is Kaspersky Lab’s new antivirus engine which is even more effective at detecting malicious programs than its predecessor. The new engine dramatically increases system scanning speed thanks to improved processing of objects and optimized use of system resources, particularly on dual- and quad-core processor platforms. The unique product architecture ensures high productivity and one of the lowest uses of system resources in the industry.
The technical preview includes a highly effective heuristic analyzer. The heuristic analyzer detects and blocks as yet unknown malicious programs. If a program signature is not included in the antivirus databases, i.e., the malicious program is unknown, the heuristic analyzer will safely launch the program in an isolated virtual environment, analyze the program’s actions and conclude with a high degree of probability whether it is potentially harmful before it is launched in a live environment.
In addition, the technical prototype includes a new user interface developed to meet the needs of both inexperienced and advanced users.

If you are not running a virus scanner, how would you know if your infected? Do you think the virus writer will pop up a helpful window telling you? You expecting to see a process called, "virus.exe" or a dir called "malware".

Of course not. Today's malware is written to be stealthy. The biggest sources of new infections aren't file attached to emails, they are drive by downloads on web pages.

So not running a fw and not running av - not a good idea, not good advice to give others.

I'm pretty sure everyone here is not dumb seeing as they have a copy of Windows 7 on hand.

Also I have been using Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8 Technical Preview. Been working great so far and haven't had any problems.

I ditched my Antivirus on the 8th of November 2006 and stopped using software firewalls back in 2004 and I have never regretted it once since :D

Still not one infection :D and If I cared about outbound protection I wouldn't have the computer connected to the Internet ;)

I always win at playing "Spot the Virus" :p

As long as you have a NAT router, you don't need a software firewall if you practice safe computing. Same goes for the AV.
But you'd be crazy to not run a firewall and be directly connected without a router. So many vulnerabilities out there and all it takes is an open port.

Unless, of course, you're *testing* antimalware software....

Bruce Harrison, lead test for MBAM, does it all the time- a live connection wide open on his system - and he uses a live system, not a Virtual system - hence why MBAM consistently gets detection and removal right.

I am downloading the Beta now and browsing to see what the overall concensus is for AV and FW.

Looks like avast and Kaspersky are the front runners thus far.

I will test with each of them.

One on one of my 32bit systems, and the other on my 64bit system.

Thanks for sharing folks!!
