Windows 7 CPU Usage goes to 100% Everday

I am using a Dell Latitude E6400 with 4 GB of ram and Core 2 Duo processor. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit as a clean install. From the day i have installed the OS, everday around 3:00 pm the CPU usage goes to 100% and the computer is very slow to respond. I am not even able to close any programs at this time. I have tried to look at the resource monitor and see what is using the CPU and there are several processes and services that hog around 30 to 50% of the CPU. I have tried to look at my schedule tasks that start around that time but i do not understand enough to figure this out.

How do i determine the real culprit and how do i correct the problem? Any help is appreciated.

I suspect Anti virus scan, windows indexing, etc. You can open the task manager and watch what process is using the cpu cycles and ram.

I have tried to identify the process or service in Performance monitor. I use Kaspersky and it is not set to perform a scan of the system. However, i have seen indexing consuming a lot of CPU. Can i change the setting of indexing? the next time it happens i will try and pin down the processes and services.

yes you can tweak it under power options in the control panel.

also type "index" in the start menu search field for some additional options

I looked for a solution for my problem for many days, but TODAY I found the solution!
my problem was: no matter what I did, my CPU was always using 100% , and the responsible for that was the SYSTEM process , IN windows 7 ultimate.

I tried everything, videocards, codecs, formatting. In the beginning, everything was OK, but after I did my own personal configuration, the cpu was 100%, and everything was so slow! man, i was desperate!
but then, TODAY, i noticed that it happened when I changed the POWER CONFIGURATION !!!!
I have the tradition of letting everything ON all the time. so I went to advanced configuration and but to NEVER turn off, in ALL CASES.
well, after I changed it BACK to the default configuration, immediately my cpu came back to its right use!

it's a miracle!

Eu tentei de tudo: trocar driver de video, trocar codecs, ffdshow, formatei o computador. No começo depois de formatar, tudo estava beleza, com o CPU normal, mas depois de eu fazer a minha configuração pessoal, o CPU ficava em 100%, e tudo ficava muito muito muito lento. Cara, eu estava desesperado!

Mas aí, HOJE, eu percebi que isso já acontecia depois que eu tinha trocado as minhas configurações de ENERGIA. Eu tenho o costume de deixar tudo ligado, tudo funcionando nao importa se eu fechar a tampa, se passar tempo, etc etc, entao eu fui nas configuracoes avancadas e mudei tudo para nunca se desligar, nem suspender, nem nada, em todos os casos.
Bem, depois que eu troquei tudo para o PADRAO, imediatamente meu cpu voltou a trabalhar da maneira que deveria, e tudo ficou bem!

The Latitude E6400 has cooling issues and this is what is responsible for the high CPU usage - I have been having this issue for a few weeks now.

Basically the CPU/GPU are overheating, and the system throttles back the CPU to 800MHz and at that speed the system cannot keep up and the CPU appears maxed out at 100%.


If you turn the machine off for a bit, or reduce the load (for example running two monitors puts a lot of demand on the GPU) then the system cools down, and the CPUs speed back up again. See this thread on the Dell forums:

I took the base off my laptop, and removed the fan, and I found that the cooling grill was completely clogged with dust. Cleaning it out has made my system run fine again. It seems that on the larger versions of the E series, they have a seperate cooling fan for the GPU, so it almost appears to be a desgin flaw with the E6400.

This (defaulting the power settings) also seems to have worked for me, but not until after I uninstalled Dell Control Point System Manager.

100% CPU on win7

Guys,

I just went to SELECT POWER PLAN and selected the High Performance plan. This seems to have dropped the cpu down to 0% which I have never seen on my win 7 laptop. could the solution be straight forward? The next few days will show that . . .

Machine (Latitude E6400 with Discrete Graphics) reverted back to 100% CPU utilization starting at 3:20pm last Friday. ​

I ran two small programs: 1.) DPC Latency Checker (helped isolate the issue to a bad device driver, although it was unknown which one) and 2.)Process Explorer (helped determine that the problem seemed to be caused by the audio device driver). The two system processes that were using the CPU usage were sstray64.exe and stacsv64.exe (neither was apparent by looking at the processes via the Windows task manager), however they showed 40-60% each using the Process Explorer program.​

I uninstalled the High Definition Audio drivers and services and the system immediately went backto idle-cpu usage. I then entered Device Manager and scanned for new devices. The audio device was found and Windows Update installed the Microsoft Version (digitally-signed) of the driver. The system then exhibited a much more tame CPU-usage during regular computer-use. This was the first “fix” that we actually witnessed the Laptop/Windows give a direct and instant response to. So we are hopeful that this will correct the issue for good.​

I also installed All CPU Meter (gadget/widget) so that we can view the CPU utilization at any given time without having to open Windows Task Manager (which can sometimes be a CPU hog in its own right).​

So far it's been okay (knock on wood). If it doesn't happen again today, then we should be clear of the issue.​
