Hi, new to windows 7 and these forums. I am looking for some advice.

I have an HP NC6400 laptop
Dual core 2.16ghz
2gb ram
new 320g hdd

I just got windows 7 professional from msdn and everything works brilliantly until the automatic updates install (I have now set them to manual). My laptop won't boot after they install and I have tried system recovery which does not help and the restore utility does not work either so the only way to get the machine to work was to reinstall windows 7.

I have attached a screenshot of the updates (there are 6 of them), one or more of which causes the issues. I notice most of the updates relate to ie8 which I don't use so I may get away without installing them.

Has anyone had a similar experience? I have rebuild my computer 4 times now and can't face doing it again but am worried about not getting the critical updates.

Thanks for any help,

James.

I have had to do 2 separate system restores is past few days and have deliberatley NOT installed IE Update 975544 as my system was locking. I also deleted from startup some Apple services (bonjour, ITunes helper etc).

Now I have a stable system - I dont know if they're related to your problem or if they 'fixed' my lockups, but now, if I leave my PC for 5 minutes after booting on, all is fine.

Be careful if itunes asks you to upgrade to 9.1, a few users have reported crashes with it.

I'm still having issues that maybe are not related to the updates as I have disabled them, but now am unable to boot up again. I am wondering on my ATI mobility X1300 gfx card is to blame. Any ideas?

Has anyone else had issues with an hp nc6400 laptop and Windows 7?

Hi

I upgraded to Itunes 9.1 over weekend, all good to date.

Sorry cant help with initial problem, though I HAVE noticed something odd...

I WAS running RC7100 WIN7 Ultimate and had a deliberately NOT installed IE Update 975544 as my system was locking up intermittently and I wanted to see, by installing some updates and not others etc, in a one-by-one scenario, what may be causing those lockups...

On Fri last week I (from within WIN7) went to My Computer, drilled down t find the WIN7 exe file on the DVD (I purchased WIN 7 Home Premium UPGRADE media) and tried to UPGRADE my WIN 7 Utlimate RC7100. A message popped up which said not eligable for upgrade FROM Ultimate to HPrem. Fine, I expected that.

So I did it again, but this time chose Custom Install, installed fine - I did NOT activate. I then again from within an unactivated Home Premium WIN7 went to the DVD, found the exe file and this time chose Upgrade, it did it, I activated, and all is fine. The old Vista trick works as we all now know.

The ODD thing though is, that with all the UPDATES that have since been loaded, the original IE Update 975544 IS still listed as Important but it is not automatically checked.

That is, Windows Update offered me, so far, about 30 important and optional updates (incl MS Office 2007 SP1 and SP2 and others) yet this IE Update 975544 update, though listed, is sort of NOT being offered as important. It's like the new install of WIN7 Prem knew that the old WIN7 RC7100 Ultimate build did not have it and that I did not want it...

...is that clear? I hope so...

Hi You will love this . I have WIN 7 working on a laptop fine . However I bought a new copy of WIN 7 for my desk top . I set it up to dual boot XP pro on IDE drive and Win 7 on SATA drive.
All fine after initial problems with the hardware . I then had the latest updates and
with a sort of registry update that updates on startup. Afer a reboot the SATA hard drive boot has been fried and I have to rebuild the hard drive from scratch.
any ideas ?

Computer crashes after windows 7 update

I am in desperate need of help! I just recently purchased a new HP dv6-1375dx laptop. Everything works fine until the computer wants to install updates. After updates are installed, it requests that you restart the computer. After the computer is restarted, it doesn't go farther than the colorful windows logo that shows up before it boots up. A black screen pops up saying something about NTF something and can't read hard drive with a 10 second count down. Asking to press any key to continue, but freezes at 1. I have to do a full system restore when this happens. Geek squad has no idea why this is happening! This is my 3rd computer. Can anyone tell me why this keeps happening after the updates get installed? Please help!!

Thanks, Brian

If this is a new computer, I would return it for a new one... You could try a repair ( hit f8 during boot, select repair option ) but if that doesnt work, Id definitely take it back and let them deal with it... dont take no for an answer, get a new one...

Similar story, just recently installed these same updates on my system (windows 7 home edition) and ever since the computer has crashed ever since in various interesting and infuriating ways.
I suspect tech help will involve rebuilding system and thus losing info on system - such a nuisance. Why is there no fix other than to rebuilt available for windows it is unfuriating. Makes me want to use anything but windows.

Hi everyone.I fix tons of laptops and i have found that certain brands hate any updates. The one brand that is the most troublesome is the asus g72gx gaming laptop. When you have a new machine and you do the first windows 7 updates,"apx 64 updates",when you reboot the whole machine goes to the garbage cann. What i do on all machines of this model is first reformatt and install the first generation asus windows 7 disc. Then i install the first generation asus drivers disc and then I disable any updates ever being installed. When i turn the macnine on it runs fine.Running fine for 7 months now.I tested this theory on another asus g72 gx that i had and i reformatted everything and then got on line and installed the first batch of updates. When i rebooted the machine the whole laptop was trashed.Blue screen of death,wi-fi not working, video not working ect.My new hp netbook had the same problem,I turned off any updates from installing and it ran fine for 3 months. Then i turned on updates and installed apx. 99 updates. When i rebooted, the machine was trashed. In short, if you have a new machine turn off the updates and never run them.If you have a trashed machine, reformatt and turn off updates and you will never have any problems.Windows 7 updates seem to break everything on a lot of machines.

My Windows 7 ALSO Crashed after Updates, Last 2 weeks

Hallo. Over the past 2 weeks, when I have had a Windows 7 update (security patch, whatever), my system will not start up properly the next time I turn the computer on. After I log in I get a 1-2 minute blue Welcome screen, and several minutes of the blank black screen before my desktop finally appears.Tonight the black screen stayed for 10+ minutes until I did a manual reboot into Safety Mode. After sluggishly barely getting troubleshooting to run, I had a second normal startup that froze at black screen. Then another Safety Mode, and finally another normal startup that took 25 minutes of black screen and me trying to access CTRL ALT DELETE Task manager before it finally pulled up my normal desktop.

I am now becoming afraid to update Windows 7 at all any more. The most recent one I installed (yesterday, 7/25/11) has caused my computer to have troubles with the SuperFetch Service. Now there is ANOTHER one and I won't do it. . . It took me about an hour and a half to work through the three start-up and two reboots to Safe Mode and troubleshooting, before my system finally crawled open to where I can use it now.

Also, both times I rebooted into Safe Mode the computer was sluggish and barely functioned in there. The System troubleshooter managed to work, but barely. I also could not connect to the Internet in there, although a couple of weeks ago when I went through this I could.

At this moment, now that all is active, however, the speed and quality of my performance is normal (very good). However, I want my computer safe, updated, and not blowing up. Please advise why these Windows 7 updates are consistently causing me problems. Thank you.

Computer:
• Dell XPS 15, December 2010
• 64 Bit
• Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 Build 7601
• Intel Core i7, Q70 1.73GHz
• 6.0 G RAM
• Bios date 11/26/10
• Drivers reviewed and updated in last couple of months
• nVidia GeForce GT435m, recent driver update
• Windows Experience Index 5.9, limited by the hard disk transfer rate.
• Common usage - EVE Online and LOTRO gaming and web/graphic designer programs
• Limited/no use of the Aero

Last 2 weeks:
• Control Panel troubleshooting - system, connection, etc. (also tonight)
• Services reviewed and truly unnecessary ones set to manual
• Startup programs reviewed and limited
• Windows Registry Checker used (also tonight)
• McAfee Quick Clean used (also tonight)
• Defrag checked - 0% fragmentation (also tonight)
• McAfee run - 0 viruses or issues detected (also tonight)
• sfc /scannow
• chkdsk /r - perhaps 20 file sectors on 320ggg drive affected/repaired with instant improvement afterwards until tonight's startup.

Thanks!
