Windows 7 Hanging A LOT, "Failed to Connect to a Windows Service"

Hi, guys.

I am running Windows 7 Professional x64. Lately, when I go to shut down the computer, Windows 7 usually hangs on the "Logging off" or "Shutting down" screen, and I have to press the power button to power up again. When I turn the PC back on, it either hangs on "Please wait" or will go to the "Welcome" screen, after which I am greeted by a totally black screen with just the white mouse pointer visible. Sometimes, it even says "Preparing your desktop" and when it finally boots to my desktop, it shows minimal icons and a Windows 98-style menu. I also frequently get the "Failed to Connect to a Windows Service" error, too. For that, I did the following:

1. Click on Start button.
2. Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
3. Right click on cmd.exe and Run Command Prompt as an Administrator. Allow elevation request.
4. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
Restart the computer.

That worked for a while, but the error is back. Any ideas on how to solve these problems? Thank you.

Adriano

Thank you, Roy, for your reply. The scannow and chkdsk commands didn't show any problems, so I installed the update you mentioned. Unfortunately, my issue still persists. I still get the "failed to connect to a Windows service" message and the loading of the Windows 98-style desktop. Occasionally, I lose Internet connectivity, as well. Below is a photo.

Too bad that you live so far away from me....or I'd just say "Bring it to me and I'll fix it for you".

My best suggestion is to take that PC to a Certified PC tech, and have him/her analyze it for failure points.
It could be just something simple/mechanical. Like maybe a dirty edge-card connector. Or a failing PSU.

Good Luck!

Thank you, Roy, for the reply. Unfortunately, I cannot follow those instructions, as the SID it mentions me supposedly having in the registry that ends with .bak doesn't end in .bak. In fact, it doesn't have an extension. It also mentions the potential of a user having two SID keys with the exact same long numbers, but the second one has .bak at the end of the long numbers and the first one doesn't. Neither of those applies to me.

Try this once. Type in services.msc in the search box under the start orb. Right click services.msc and create an icon on the desktop. Now when you reboot your computer immediately without hesitation go to Services by double clicking the icon and sort the order of services by clicking the Status tab so you organize all services that show up as either started or starting.

If you do see a service/s that says starting, what is it?
