Hi,

I have been trying to install windows 7 on my hd and initially started with ubuntu on partition 1 then resized partition to leave unallocated space for windows 7.

Now I am installing windows 7 from cd and can't get past 'where do you want to install Windows' page because of error stated in title.

I've tried having unallocated space, a ntfs partition, and now have completely wiped the hd of ubuntu's partitions to clean install windows 7. None of the attempts have gotten me past the location of install page.

What can I do to get windows 7?

Hello rdevoe, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have you done a real wipe or did you just format Grub.

   Note

It is also very useful before starting the Windows installation process to correct for disk format errors of many kinds, to include over-writing the Linux / Grub boot loader, that is known to cause serious issues when installing Windows to a HDD / SSD that has had Grub as a loader in the past; also to correct installation errors when clean installing Windows 7 to a space that originally contained Windows XP.

I cleaned the hd, that is all I have done. How do you completely override the linux boot loader besides the clean command?

Clean command is sufficient.

Do you have an EFI BIOS? It requires special installation steps if you don't remove the EFI Boot Disk from BIOS Boot order and enable Legacy BIOS if it's an avaialable choice.
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums

If not then wipe again and format an NTFS Primary partition to mark Active following step 2.2 in SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation.

Is there a newer BIOS update? If not reset the BIOS to defaults, set SATA controller to AHCI, HD first to boot, trigger installer using one-time BIOS Boot Menu key. Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Where did you get Win7? How is the disk burned and how is it to be activated?

In some instances simply using the clean only is not sufficient to over-write the Grub loader you must use the clean all command instead, have a look at Step One of this tutorial for information on the process.
