Solved Windows 7 laggy, many programs unresponsive

(apologize if this belongs in performance and maintenance)
My computer is running better, and starts up every time. However it randomly becomes very laggy. All 3 web browsers experience this problem, along with most any program I have run(office, datalogging programs for my truck...)

I am looking for some help to get my computer back to its normal state.

I filled out my system specs per the thread, and the tool hosted on this site.

I run spybot and have found no issues there. I also downloaded malwarebytes and found nothing.

I found this thread and am walking through the steps just to see if i can find anything obvious, but nothing yet. I am running the seven forums diag tool, but it appears to be hung up on something, i'll let it continue to run.

I am running sfc /scannow and waiting on results also.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the log.

It gives a location of the log, but i can't open the file.

For starters....

1. Disable Spybot Search & Destroy..... or better still remove it ..... You have malwarebytes for now...

2. I see you don't have an antivirus installed..... Please install MSE (Microsoft security essential)\

3. Disable Windows Defender service once you have done #2

Spybot is removed.
Windows defender is disabled, essentials is running a scan now. will report back later

No change. Ran a full scan, with nothing found.

Computer still lags to accomplish any function. Click on the windows pearl and a pause before the menu appears, click in the menu and a pause before anything happens. Open a browser(chrome, ff, IE9) and a pause before it opens. Click in a field to type info and a pause before anything happens. Play pandora or youtube and it constantly freezes the audio and video

open task manager and then go to processes.... and then sort by CPU in descending order.... post a snapshot here

well that only show a CPU usage of 2 %

What i really looking for is when you say that you open some programs and the whole system begans to lag.... ... just look at the CPU and tell me if you see a spike in any other process other than System Idle Process..

There are 2 probable cause... the system would lag....if the HDD is having problems or there could be other processes thats eating up the CPU (probably virus or even a corrupted legitimate processes)

I really don't think its virus related, as I just recently installed this copy of windows, but you never know.

I have task manager open on the side, and I opened several programs, and observed what happened. Firefox will spike it to about 35% or so, but just briefly. I played a video on youtube and ff/flash would both just a bit, but no more than 15-20% total. I opened paint, notepad, word, and various other programs. I never saw a spike above 30-35% and it was all very brief. Nothing pulling a lot of the cpu's resources for any extended period of time.

That doesn't look good...

Reallocated Sector Count means you have Bad sectors.... the Raw value 28 is in Hex .... and when you convert that to decimal its 40 which is close to the Threshold of 50... this is a warning sign for your HDD life

You could do a chkdsk or use the Seagate seatools to do the test to check for errors

In anycase i would suggest you do backup of your data....

Windows installed 31 updates last night and today my computer won't boot. Guess ill do a restore, back up, and get a new hard drive for it. Any suggestion on brand?

Well the WD Scorpio blue or the velociraptor or the seagate momentus series are all good choices...

But curious to know... have you done the test i mean...chkdsk or seatools on your old drive..... before you decided to buy the WD ??

I had initially suspected the HD, however I feel kind of foolish as the chkdsk didn't show anything. However, even after a restore the computer will not boot. I ran the chkdsk from the command prompt on my install disk.

After rebooting when the seatools didnt work my computer started right up. So i downloaded seatools for windows as opposed to the dos version.

It passed the long test, short test and the s.m.a.r.t test. Now what?
