Windows 7 My Documents Issue

I have server 2003 Standard with xp clients, running ok for 5 yrs - patched to latest updates. My documents folder for each user is set to U:\ which is their home drive (typically \\Server\UserName)

I have a new laptop with Win7 Pro, installed it & updated to latest patches as
local admin.

Made it a member of my domain & logged in as one of my users. Wished to change the my documents folder in same way. Found it in its new location
(C:\users\username) & went to the location tab. It shows as
\\Server\UserName\Vista !
It will NOT let me change it.

Can anybody tell me why and how I can overcome it ?

Does the user you logged into have admin rights?

Did you click the Move Button or did you just try typing the name in the field and click apply?

What specific error does it give you?

The user does not have admin rights.

I only tried to type new name field, field is locked - am not on site (its saturday afternoon in australia) so can't repeat excercise right now, however I dont think move was available. Will have to confirm that next week.

No error message, just unable to overtype location

No, I do not know. Possibly something to do with Admin Rights? or lack of?
Maybe something got buggered?
are you scripting anything? Using AutoUnattends? WSIM and DISM?

Hi again Tepid

Tried with admin rights, no luck. noticed that Restore Default, Move & Find target buttons not even visible.

Checked on the administrator account & its location is set correctly, with options to alter all enabled. The administrator does not have a home folder set in its properties whereas the users do, & this is where their my documents location is set to. Wondered if this is related to problem.

Set up new user with no home page & bingo problem solved.

Removed home page from one of my original users & tried again - guess what - still goes to old (incorrect) location - any thoughts.

Once you’ve joined the domain the user home directory is determined by the user profile… In the profile page for each user it can be mapped via a logon script or by choosing a drive letter and then pointing it to \\server\users\%username% (for example)…

Thats what I normally do. The users home folder in their profile page is set to U: and is in location \\servername\username.

With an XP user, the my documents location is unchanged when you join the domain, however we change it to U: - no problems.

The difference with Win 7 appears to be that it creates a folder called documents in the home folder, then takes that same location for the my documents location & does not allow you to change it - is this correct ?

Nope. I've got maybe 50 - 60 Win 7 machines currently on existing networks using different server versions and have had no issue or change in the way the user shares are configured when you join the domain...

Maybe some screen shots of the account(s) where the files are on the server. How you have the redirection setup. Sometimes I see a picture and have the answer right away.
