Windows 7 not booting

I seem to have a curious problem with Windows 7. I'm running it on a machine with the following spec:

  • Intel Pentium 4 2.93GHz
  • 2Gb RAM
  • 80b Primary SATA HDD & 500Gb Secondary SATA HDD
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT

I can install Windows 7 without problems - however after updating Windows 7 refuses to boot - I just get a black screen. I've tried getting W7 to boot under Safe Mode, that just hangs on the "Please Wait" screen.

Initially I thought this may be a problem with the BIOS being out of date - so I reinstalled W7 and flashed the BIOS (at the same time 3 updates installed). On this occasion after the OS booted fine. However after more updates, the same thing happens again.

Any ideas how to resolve this? I can't understand why it would freeze on the loading screen (or not even trying to load anything via Safe Mode). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you able to boot into WindowsRE? While your computer is booting, hit F8 (like you're going into Safe Mode) but select Repair your computer instead. This will bring you to WinRE where you can recover your machine; you may have restore points configured before the updates (Win7 should automatically do this).

So just a thought: Some Windows Updates contain drivers; Microsoft may have dumped a bad driver onto your machine while performing updating. It sounds like something in the updates is causing it.

Okay, I tried upgrading packages one by one and rebooting after each. Upon installing the 'browser choice' (I forgot it's exact name) and rebooting, I get the boot problem again. After running WindowsRE and choosing to use system restore (I didn't get to choose which restore point to use), the system still won't boot.

Open a Support case with Windows Update when you get back to the desktop and get the exact name of the update which caused the issue.
