Not a problem - I have lots to keep me occupied :)

I should have specified an Elevated Command Prompt there - the files aren't visible in a DIR done in a normal user account

try running this one....
DIR C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\NTUSER,DAT

Do you think it will be feasible to try to fix my issue(s)? I know you have better things to do than chase this issue for hours/days. I just created an image of this drive. I also created an image back in May (I think) when I built the system. I think I also created a restore disk with it. I'm not sure if any of this helps, or if my ssd drive may be damaged. Do you have any suggestions? I have two work assignments that are past due. What do you think my quickest option is to get functional? You have already been a tremendous help & it is greatly appreciated!!!

I had one thread that was going for over a month - we eventually identified and fixed the problem :)

Ooops - typo alert!

That last should have been...

try running this one....
DIR C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\NTUSER.DAT

(note the point, instead of the comma!)

I actually caught the comma & tried with a dot too...same result. Hey, if I didn't have to use this system for work, I'd hang in there a month...just for curiosity. I have no doubt-whatsoever-that you'd nail it down. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to get this thing up and running even if I have to wipe it (although I don't want to). I noticed that I have some registry hives from 9/11/13 (before the issue) in the RegBack directory & thought about trying to load them. Then if that don't work maybe trying a repair install. I finally found the event log for chkdsk & the bottom line was that it found no problems (although sfc wouldn't completely fix the errors). I also followed some instructions for sfc that created a log file. I'll attach it here just in case there is something obvious to you. It looked like a ton of errors to me. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks Again!!!

Interesting - That log shows a lot of errors that I wasn't expecting to see - but could account for your problems....

There are a number of errors in there which should be fixed, or at least made more readable, by CheckSUR.... if it works!

Please downloadand save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need tolook in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft DownloadCenter)

Run it - The toolcan take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install')depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear tofreeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result islogged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip theCheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply

There are a number of errors in there which should be fixed, or at least made more readable, by CheckSUR.... if it works!

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply

I have attached the log file. I have also ran MBAM, Rkill, & Kaspersky Rescue (Scan). They found no infections. I can't imagine what caused this problem. I did notice that one of the first errors in event view (before everything went haywire) is "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Hardisk5\DR5". The next prominent warning concerns e1cexpress which I think relates to the NIC. Then I have an Error that the File system structure on the disk is corrupt & there are many of those. Do you think reloading the reg hives or a repair install would help...and is one of those methods better in general (even if it won't help my system)? Thanks again for the help!!!

I'll get on these asap - but it's getting late, so it may not be until tomorrow evening I get a chance to post a fix protocol.

I really appreciate it, but I must take action before then. I am going to lose a work contract if I don't. I really appreciate all of your help! I'm sorry to get this far & bail on you. Do you have any suggestions for me? If not, I'm going to try a couple of repair options & then do a clean install if no luck? Thanks so much!

I think I've got everything except the VC9.0 files sorted. (VC ones are always fun, as they require extensive renaming, unless you're lucky!)

I've uploaded a file - emnaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder emnaa in the same place.
Open this folder- there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

And the content of the manifest sfolder (.manifest files) into this folder:
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

I'll work on the VC files tomorrow :)

Thanks my friend, but the point of my last post, was that I didn't want you to waste any more time on this, because I have to get this system up an running within the next 12 hours or so. I was just wondering if you had any suggestion as to whether it would be advisable to attempt a repair install/load reg hives, etc...or just do a clean install? You don't know how much I appreciate the time you've taken to help me out here.

As far as the VC90 problems go, you could try uninstalling the Visual C++ 2008 redistributable - that may fix the problems, and you can reinstall it afterwards.

There's nothing there that will stop the computer working - I didn't spot any grave errors in the CBs.log either - so you should be able to continue working without a problem.

Here's the file repairs needed from the CBS.log

I've uploaded a file - emnab.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print theseinstructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, starttapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of whichshould be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\emnab
hit the enter key - if you get a 'NotFound' error try
DIR D:\emnab
or
DIR E:\emnab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder willneed to be substituted (for<drive>) into the followingcommand...

XCOPY<drive>:\emnab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)andwhen the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit CommandPrompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in anElevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

Thanks. I will try everything here. The computer is working (in general) besides the not genuine error and missing device drivers--which cause those devices not to function. Thanks again & I will let you know how things turn out!
