Windows 7 overtakes XP - finally

@Magus:

Regarding not using an antivirus....since you have never used one how would you actually know if you had certain malware or viruses in your PC, they don't always have symptoms, many just hide in the background , like keyloggers that can steal all sorts of private information like bank passwords CC account numbers, PINs, ect, and until you find your personal info stolen or your accounts drained you'll never know. It will be too late. Everyone that uses any Windows OS or OS X should have a basic security suite..MSE and AVAST, are excellent and use very little resources.

At the very least you should use a free stand alone scanner like Malwarebytes.org which will do an excellent job at detecting items that may have already have sneaked into your system.

I DO agree though that the best defense against malware and other infections is the security suite that is located between the users ears, is actually analog, and is always free forever. :geek:

I do use no-script in firefox which is a pain to get set up fully but I do attribute it to saving my butt on a few occasions over the years.

Well, I totally disagree that Linux ultimately "sucks" because that's an understatement. I even use it if I'm handling potentially dangerous operations like removing malware from USB flasdrives because its immune to most malware. Believe me I've done that many times to rid off malware from my own flashdrive or other people's flashdrives. I just let the explorer on Linux show hidden files I manually delete these bad stuff without even using an antivirus. Its way too overlooked by many people.

that is one of the 2 or 3 useful things it's good for. lol
the other one I use it for is torrenting. I don't trust windows to not catch a std from another computer lol
Hahaha, same with me lol.:) I also use Linux for downloading files via torrent and I don't install any torrent programs on my Windows 7 either.

I still love XP. :)

I like XP a lot, and I hope Microsoft makes an Xbox compatible updated version, such as "Windows X2" or something.:D As for Win8, I think it is a hyped, bloated, underdeveloped, waste. But that's just my opinion. I just don't like it being a phone clone. Windows 7 rocks, but it's not perfect.:( I like XP's "outdated" interface, and think it would be nice in 3D. XP Forever! ;) Oh yeah, and, <nerdrant> Windows XP is more compatible with my games, applets, and other software. Why oh, why? Does everyone that owns an xbox seem to think it's magic?
I mean like literally magic...
They expect it to run some sort of windows based operating system
Out perform the newest of hardware on the market
Cause the planets to align thus making communication with the common household dog and cat finally possible.
Make your older sibling stop picking on you
Lower the temperature in a hot room
Hack into the pentagon
Get your wife pregnant
Cause your girlfriend to miscarry
crack the human genome 'faster than that stupid computer ever could'
Get us to mars, Saturn, and a bunch of other planets I think they were just making up names...
Fix pollution / the environment
Stop hate crimes
Bring the world together in peaceful harmony
Make Jim Carey funny again
Prove that once and for all inverted controls are the proper interface (as any REAL Australian will tell you
Make it so ALL the doors open in a video game
Cure cancer , AIDS, and basically any other ailment that afflicts mankind
....and that's just the start of the insanity.

...it does start to get ridiculous after a bit.
and if you think any of the above is me being a smarty pants your welcome to check the ign/gamespot forums/comments because all of the above has actually been suggested by xbox users there.

I think we all know that Linux and all its distros 'suck', even though the Linux world out there refuse to believe it. :devil2::devil2::devil2:

Could not disagree more with you. While I don't think that most Linux desktop distros lend themselves to the average home user who has only really used Windows on a home computer.....in the right hands and in the right situation a Linux box is a wonderful thing.

The overwhelming number of servers that I run for my company are linux based boxes. There are many reasons for this, including but not limited to
  • No license costs
  • Less disk space needed
  • Less security vulnerabilities
  • hardly "ever" needs a reboot. Only for a kernel update
  • Open source code can be edited and changed if not functioning as expected
  • Non Linux admins are intimidated by the command line, thus they cannot hardly screw up the box because they are stopped dead in their tracks. With a Windows GUI, they just click around and try to figure it out and that often leads to more problems and security vulnerabilities.
  • outrageously simply backup/configuration/documentation. everything is within a text file that is easy to read, copy, and cut and paste into documentation.
  • they simply run, and run and run.

I've had Linux boxes running safely without downtime for 2-4 years. And there has never really been a moment where I have ever said, "boy, I really wish this were a Windows server".

But with me, it doesn't have to be Linux or nothing. I have a Windows laptop, a Windows desktop, i use a Windows desktop at work. I use Windows based domain controllers, I use Microsoft Exchange servers,...and with these things, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Most people cannot claim this type of uptime with Windows. Reason being, if you actually keep up with security updates...then Windows is going to require you to reboot. Linux hosts have to be rebooted for this same reason far less.

The windows servers that I manage are generally stable too. But I cannot disregard the fact that sometimes it takes a reboot to fix a small problem that otherwise doesn't respond to anything else. Having to completely reboot a Linux host for an obscure issue is quite rare.

But more than anything, licensing is a huge issue. We have 100+ servers running Linux. If these were Windows servers and we had to pay for licenses, CAL's, and server software...it would be far, far more expensive.

Hi there
As servers Linux are without equal -- everything Pparks1 says is true -- in general the only time you need to re-boot a Linux box is if you physically change the MB or if you want to install a new version.

To get back to the point of the thread --if people want to continue to use XP --so be it but don't expect newer hardware to work with it forever.

By all means use older hardware that still functions on say an XP Virtual Machine -- but to say W8 is horrible / waste of time etc before it's even in Beta just displays IMO a pitiful amount of ignorance apart from other shortcomings which I probably wouldn't be allowed to mention on this Forum (or any other decently moderated Forum either).

Most people who have actually taken the trouble to perservere with W8 instead of giving up after the first boot have been quite surprised by it's stability and general snappy performance.

Most Linux "haters" either have never taken the trouble to understand even the simplest of command line commands and probably trying to use it for totally inappropriate purposes. It's NOT windows even if you can customize a GUI to look almost like Windows.

If you have a load of servers out there -- well it's money being spent that doesn't need to be -- I do use a W2K3 server or two.o but compare the licensing costs of a number of these compared with say 50 or more Linux servers.

'Nuf Said.

Cheers
jimbo

Haivng just gotten my new WIndows 7 computer at work Ican't imagine why on Earth anyone would use it. The minute I discovered the system is preset to alphabetical sorting with no option for anything else I hated it. Uh sorting view and ascending / descending are all sorting options.
Sounds like you just need to give it a minute to figure it out. Sounds like you want grouping off. not hard to do takes about 5 seconds if you know how.
You can turn off that breaking it into parts too. I can understand some frustration there is a minor learning curve but I think you decided to hate out of the box.

What do you mean "XP dies on April 8, 2014"? Is Microsoft going to make all Windows XP computers spontaneously combust then? Or are they going to steal every single one out of the homes of millions? And, you might not want to hear this, but it's true: XP is the best selling Microsoft os. 7 doesn't even come close. Microsoft is now the number 2 computer company. Steve Zuckerburg called Microsoft "the underdog". Apple beat them, which means the apocalypse Failure de Grande. Windows 8 is the child of Windows Phone 7 and Windows Vista. Here's a fact for you: Microsoft is repeating itself. Here's how: Windows Longhorn -> Windows Vista -> Windows Server 2008 -> Windows 7 -> Windows 8. These systems ALL use the same code. :D

Here's how: Windows Longhorn -> Windows Vista -> Windows Server 2008 -> Windows 7 -> Windows 8. These systems ALL use the same code. :D

Unfortunately you are not as smart as you think you are.
server 08 and win 7 do actually have the same kernel, which is why updates generally apply to both of them.
This has never been 'secret' or anything though.
The longhorn kernel has more in common with xp than vista or win 7 though.
