If it will start at all with other HD plugged, can you post back another Disk Mgmt screenshot as the problem may be apparent?

You can also then run chkdsk from Windows on the other HD without having to boot DVD/CD to run it: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

If it won't startup, unplug the Win7 HD then try running chkdsk /r from booted DVD or CD Command Line (press Shift f10 at first screen).

Then boot the maker's HD diag/repair CD to see if it will find the HD to run full scan. If it won't see HD and chkdsk won't run, then the HD is confirmed dead. Data is retrievable only if the DVD/CD will see the HD.

greg I will say it for the third time. The other HDD will not appear at all in disk manager, so there is no point in him posting another screen shot of it.

Also, can you provide another link to the manufacturer's diagnostics test? The link you provided before is broken. Please provide a link to a different site if possible .

I am traveling right now and having to skim more than usual.

He reported that HD was registering in BIOS setup so I thought it was worth another try to see if it would be detected by explorer.

If not, then try running chkdsk /r from DVD/CD command line, then maker's diag/repair full CD scan while only problem HD is plugged.

We learn in Install Forum here (the #1 Win7 installation forum on the web) to be thorough enough to backtrack to steps where something might have changed, as often happens when trying multiple approaches.

Just to make sure you are running the correct command: with only problem HD plugged, boot Win7 DVD/CD press Shift F10, in Command Box type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (if it shows up)
DETAIL DISK

Report back anything listed.

If not, boot maker's Repair CD to see if it detects HD and can repair. If not it is likely dead.

Most hard drive warranties are 3 to 5 years. I would go to there website and try to make a warranty claim. I know one guy that was on here the other day managed to make one without proof of purchase by putting in the serial number. They sent him a free replacement of course. Don't know if you will have that kind of luck or not. If there is any important data on the hard drive, data recovery almost always cost extra. Actually, I can't think of a single case I've heard of where it didn't.

Then the hard drive is definitely done for. I would see about that warranty claim.
